Thunder Rosa talks about the importance of her double gear or zero gear, leading the women’s team in AEW

Thunder will walk Rosa on Sunday night double or nothing Pay-per-view as the AEW Women’s World Champion. But “La Mera Mera” will be much more than just herself when she walks into the ring. Rosa spoke with ComicBook earlier this week about how she dedicated her special ring for the event to the women who disappeared near the US-Mexico border as well as the victims of the Ovalde, Texas, mass shooting on May 24. He said, “I had a conversation with media representative Tony, and my parents, in fact, were talking about it, about having a lot of anxiety because in the last two years, a lot of women have disappeared in Mexico. These women are young, 18-35 years old. They went to work, they went out to look for work, they went to school, and they never came back. The only thing everyone knows is that they are missing and may have died.

“So I thought it would be a great idea for me to go out and represent Lost Souls. And now, with the unfortunate situation that happened in Ovaldi, Texas…You know, I live in San Antonio. Ovaldi is 45 minutes away. And I’m very involved in the community. The fact that 19 kids died the way they did, it breaks my heart. But then again, I’ve been looking at pictures of kids and I was just remembering…working with kids like that, and I know how hard it is for parents to lose their kids and lose family members. So I really want, with all that I wear it, just representing them in every moment and every step.”

AEW double or nothing Tonight takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will see Rosa defend her pay-per-view title for the first time against Serena Depp. Stay tuned for full coverage of tonight’s event and check out the full interview with Rosa below.

How was your time as a hero so far?

Well, it feels really good. Yesterday I had the opportunity to do…and put it on Twitter, to do my first compilation with 5th graders here in Las Vegas. And just the fact that I hold the title, and am able to talk to girls and boys who have similar backgrounds, is very touching. Because when I was asking some questions to some little girls, they had some of the same or very similar goals that I had when I was a little girl. And now they see me walking with a championship, they see me on TV, and it’s like giving them hope that no matter where they come from, that they can achieve whatever they want.

And that’s the same thing I feel with other women just in general, in the whole world, women and men who want to make their dreams come true no matter what. And then they saw me and they were like, “Wow, I’ve seen her from being nobody to now on top of the world.” So acting in this positive way is very important, both in and out of the ring. So when I come on Sunday, I know I’m going to act out a lot, and I’m not going to do it on my own, let’s say. I’m coming with a whole army of people who support me. With an entire army of people, unfortunately, they are not here anymore, but I will be the one who supports their goals and dreams.

On top of everything you do with AEW, you also run Mission Pro Wrestling. Who do you think from the list is about to appear on the world stage?

Oh man, I love KiLynn King. You’ve seen her matches on and off our show. She is passionate about wrestling, everything. Last year I had the opportunity to travel with her. I just took it under my wing, I was like, “Let’s book in different places. Let’s wrestle with each other.” And just seeing how much she loves professional wrestling and how much you mean to her reminds me a lot, and these are the kind of people/we’ve been working closely with Rebel twins. They actually came and stayed with us in Texas. There are many possibilities for them in the future. They are very young. Hopefully they can get their tools together and put them in the next gear.

who else? Oh man, I have a lot. Judy is a threat, she’s another. I have to fight it. She is from Canada. It’s one of those hidden gems that you have to tap live to be like, “Oh my God, this girl is a thing.” I haven’t watched her promos, but I’m pretty sure if she did some things like that, that would be great. But in the ring, those are them.

I’ve been following the Taco Vlog. How did you come up with this idea?

So it’s always like finding your niche, right? And everyone says to me, “Hey, Thunder, you gotta do something with food,” because I always eat. And folks, when I was creating my vlogs, I always stuffed my face with food. And I love tacos and I was like, “Maybe you should go eat tacos everywhere.” I was going to do it myself and check it out, just sort of like the Food Network. But then they’re like, “Let’s do an interview.” And then I had an Evil Uno, and from there, go off. So it was really fun. I love sharing a lot of my culture with a lot of people who haven’t eaten tacos or authentic Mexican food. So it’s fun to see their reactions. It’s also fun to see how open they are when they’re comfortable and having a good dinner.

Because the whole thing is to remember when… I mean, I don’t know about your family, but I had some of my best memories around the table, eating out and sharing things and Christmas and all the holidays, just love lunch or dinner. So I want to explain this in a taco vlog so that people feel comfortable talking about what they want, as much or as little as possible, and also have good food in their stomachs.

Who was the worst at eating spicy food? And why was it Powerhouse Hobbs?

It’s Hobbs. It’s been a little like this… my God. Like, “I don’t like…” This thing wasn’t hot! I just can’t. Older men are usually the ones who are most afraid of cats.

It was great to see you cracking Wolverine’s gear a few months ago. How long have you been a fan of X-Men?

X-Men has always been one of my favorite anime, I think. I remember a lot of cartoons, when I was young, I watched them on channel 6, in black and white, because we didn’t have a regular TV. It’s like, little TV, and that was the only channel I could watch, so I’m going to watch it. I remember watching it and didn’t understand anything they were saying because it was in English. So I loved working. Then they translated it, and used to play it on TV, Mexican TV. So we kind of stuck with it, and I loved the storytelling or all, how the mutants were, and how they didn’t like it. And I don’t know, I just identify myself with mutations because I always feel like a stranger all around. And for Wolverine, I think… once the movies and stuff come out, they give it a more human part of it and make it more pervasive.

And then, when they make the girl from Spain (Dafne Keen in LoganPlaying the role of the daughter, I looked a lot when I was little, so everyone always made fun of me. Like, “You should call her Wolverine because she looks like you.” And I did it, and everyone lost their fools. And I really enjoy it. I read more old and excellent comic books, and I also have my own personal comic book because I think it’s important to tell your story in an easier way that everyone can relate to, with pictures. So yeah, that’s my thing with the X-Men.

Are there any other mutants you’d like to photograph?

They designed one for Magneto, the Magneto one. I really like Magneto and his motives about why he hates humans and everyone else.

What do you think of the next big step for AEW’s women’s division?

There are a lot of things we can do to improve what we have. I don’t know. It is very difficult for me to answer this question because, as I said, everything can go in different directions. right? And as a champion, I really want to be there and be flexible and be able to help build our new talent. I think this is very important.

It’s like, again, there’s a lot of things we can do, I think, to make AEW even better than it is. And as I said, there are a lot of people, a lot of knowledge. Here is Mercedes Martinez. I am here. I run my own promotion with women. There are plenty of other people out there who have worked with women, and we’re all ready to be all down to earth. So I think there are a lot of things we can do. And we will continue to take positive steps, to continue to be one of the best teams, if not the best.
