Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jan Segura and Boston Celtics center Al Horford have both struggled to see post-season in their long careers.
There are a few things Jan Segura and Al Horford have in common.
For example, both elite athletes call home the Dominican Republic: Horford of Puerto Plata; Segura from San Juan.
Both went pro in 2007: Horford was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, and Segura made his Dominican Summer Angels debut in the Dominican Summer League a few months later.
Unfortunately, the MLB veteran and the highest-paid Latin American player in the NBA also have one thing in common: some of the longest droughts the top players have ever seen.
When Segura congratulated Horford on his emotional victory in the Eastern Conference Finals in Game 7, Gabrielle Starr of FanSided indicated that Segura was likely calling Horford at that moment. The 35-year-old center has not seen the NBA Finals in his entire career, and the short 32-year-old now leads active MLB players in games played without a post-season vision.

In Segura’s case, he wasn’t called up to the majors until 2012, and the only team he could have won a flag with during his professional baseball career were the Phillies if they called him up in 2008. Of course, the Phillies didn’t take over Segura until 2019, One year after he was named MLB All-Star for the second time in his career.
Segura has had the misfortune of battling teams far from the qualifying rounds, including the 2022 Phillies. Star also put it in a file last article:
“The Philadelphia Phillies are amazing, bewildering, bewildering in their continual failure. They are consistent only in their inconsistency.”
The same could have been said of the longtime Horford’s Atlanta Hawks, who finally saw the NBA Finals last season thanks to Trae Young. With the cast surrounding Horford now in Boston, this may finally be his year — and ideally, it could also become Segura’s year.
