All four seasons Weird things It borrowed elements from 1980s pop culture not only to help immerse audiences in that era, but also to celebrate the decade’s many accomplishments. The series’ fourth season has continued in this trend, which includes highlighting Kate Bush’s song “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” by connecting specifically with Max (Sadie Sink) and her emotional narration this season. Understandably, usage of the song has seen a huge growth in popularity, including the track that jumped to the top of the iTunes charts just days after the new season slipped from its first size of episodes.
The song was the first track and first single on Bush’s album dogs of love, with “Running Up That Hill” easily the singer-songwriter’s biggest hit at the time. Although it may be a popular song, the move to the Top 30 is on paintingHot 100, that year it would compete with songs like “Careless Whisper” by Wham! and “Like a Virgin” by Madonna and “I Want to Know What Love” by Alien.
The song was originally titled A Deal With God, although it was changed due to concerns that its broadcast would be limited due to religious implications.
“Running Up That Hill” ended up playing a similar role in The Clash series “Should I Stay or Should I Go” in season one.

Throughout the new season, brutal Vecna targets victims and brings them to the Upside Down, with the villain still setting his sights on Max. Victor Creel (Robert Englund) is said to be the only survivor of Vicna, as Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Robin (Maya Hawke) discover he can escape from the Upside Down when he hears his favorite song.
Max’s favorite song is “Running Up That Hill,” with an intense sequence in Episode 4 where she sees her friends put her headphones on to blast the track when her mind seems to be shifting to the Upside Down. When this allows her to reconnect with the real world and escape the Upside Down, she continues to listen to the song in an episode to prevent her mind from escaping from her body again.
