Box Office: Top Gun Projects: Maverick $84.5 Million in Second Weekend

Tom Cruise is the king of the domestic box office once again.

Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick climbed to the top of the charts in its second weekend of release, grossing $25 million on Friday from 4,751 locations. After enjoying the widest domestic opening last weekend with 4,732 North American cinemas, “Maverick” actually added 19 more for a sophomore outing.

The studio is expecting $84.5 million through Sunday, which is a staggering 33% drop from its opening three-day $124 million. A small drop like this is an impressive feat, especially for a movie that opened over $100 million. For comparison, recent movies like “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “The Batman” fell 67% and 50.4%, respectively, in their sophomore travels.

Even for a star like Cruz, a 33% drop is pretty much unheard of in recent years. The actor’s latest movie, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” fell 42.5% in its second weekend after opening to $61.2 million.

Word of mouth was astounding for the sequel, with the film receiving a rare “A+” score in cinema points, indicating maximum approval from general ticket buyers.

Paramount expects Maverick to expand its gross domestic product to $290 million as of Sunday.

Reunited with “Oblivion” director Joseph Kosinski, Cruise returns to Top Gun as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell to train a new fleet of pilots for a challenging mission. Besides Cruise, “Top Gun” stars Miles Teller, Glenn Powell, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly and Val Kilmer.

“Top Gun: Maverick” will soon see competition in the form of “Jurassic World: Dominion” when it premieres in North America on June 10. Thursday with an expected weekend total of $50 million plus.

Directed by Colin Trevorrow, who directed 2015’s first “Jurassic World,” “Dominion” brings together stars of “Jurassic Park” films past and present, including Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and newcomers DeWanda Wise and Mamoudou Athey.

More is coming…
