The couple just completed a UK tour that grabbed the headlines and now has more good news for fans, revealing that they’ve been secretly working on new material together for the past three years. Beck posted the video for Depp’s new composition, This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr, on his YouTube channel this afternoon, following the announcement of the new album. Beck said of the new song, “You blew me away with it. That song is one of the reasons I asked him to make an album with me.” Scroll down to see the new video below.
The Hollywood actor had joined his friend on stage at every concert on his UK tour, which ended two nights ago.
During a June 2 show in Gateshead, Beck told the audience, “I met this guy five years ago and we haven’t stopped laughing since. We’ve already made an album. I don’t know how it happened. It’s coming out in July.”
And now the musician has shared more details and interpretations of the album’s title, as well as hearing for the first time a new track.
Adele is previously best known for choosing 19 and then 21, 25 and 30 as album titles. However, it is clear that Depp and Beck do not use the number to indicate their age at the time of writing their new material.
Depp’s love of vintage Hollywood is well known and the title of his song is a homage to Austrian/American film star Hedy Lamarr.
Not only was she one of the great screen icons of the 1940s and 1950s, she was also listed as an inventor.
Her work in World War II on wireless guidance systems for Allied torpedoes can still be seen in modern GPS and Bluetooth technology.
Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck’s new album #18 will be released on July 15.
