Lizzo’s latest single “Grrrrls” was immediately met with backlash yesterday, June 13, after many fans objected to the language the singer used.
Since the release of her 2019 Grammy-winning film Cuz I Love You, Lizzo has found herself in the position of the world champion for body positivity and self-esteem.
Tracks like “Good as Hell” and “Juice,” both of which celebrate these themes, prompted Lizzo to complete pop stars.
In fact, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Lizzo is now one of the biggest pop stars in the world, with the singer attracting 34 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
However, the much-loved Lizzo brand is in danger after the release of her new single, Grrrls.

The controversy over the new single arose due to the use of a certain word in the first verse.

The text of the poem in the question is: “Do you see this **t? I***z.”
Fans, (mainly from the UK where the word is usually used more offensively than the US), immediately expressed their unease about the song.
“I’m disappointed at Lizzo” One fan tweet. “There is no excuse for using a capable insult in the song of 2022… Lizzo calls for inclusivity and should do better.” Keep going.
Another wrote: “Hello @lizzo my disability cerebral palsy is literally classified as spastic hemiplegia…your new song makes me so angry + sad.”
Within hours, the topic was popular on Twitter, with widespread calls for the lyric to be deleted.

Lizzo’s quick reaction
However, it wasn’t long before Lizzo touched on the language controversy in Grrrrls.
In a statement uploaded to Twitter, Lizzo quickly apologized for her choice of words:
“It has been brought to my attention that there is a harmful word in my new song ‘GRRRLS’. Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote offensive language.”
“As a fat black woman in America, she used so many hurtful words against me so I’ve exceeded the power of words she could have…I’m proud to say there’s a new version of GRRRLS with a lyrical change.”
Fans applaud Lizzo’s apology and reload
Following her statement, Lizzo re-uploaded Grrrls to streaming platforms, with the lyrics changed.
The text of the new lyric is now: “Do you see this **t? Banned.”
Despite the initial negative reaction, fans seemed to appreciate the decision:
Grrrls is the second single to be released from Lizzo’s upcoming album Special.
The album is scheduled to be released on July 15, and at the moment, it seems that the controversy surrounding Grrrls hasn’t had much of an impact on this.
