Nreal brings Steam games to AR smart glasses

Nreal today announced that Steam support for AR smart glasses is now in beta, allowing PC gamers to stream their favorite Steam games to their AR glasses. In addition, Nreal announced a new hackathon event called AR Jam to further promote the development of creative AR experiences.

Talking about Steam on the rollout of the Nreal beta, Nreal co-founder Peng Jin said, “We’re excited to be the first to bring Steam to augmented reality. The beta is meant to give people a glimpse of what’s possible. After all, AAA games should be played on a 200-degree HD screen and should be played without location restrictions.”

It’s worth noting that the current beta requires very little setup efforts, and is not optimized for all Steam games. But you can enjoy AAA titles like DiRT Rally and the entire Halo series right away. Alternatively, users can also enjoy games using the Xbox Cloud Gaming service on Nreal Light and Nreal Air by accessing the browser within Nebula, Nreal’s 3D system.

The AR Jam Hackathon will kick off on June 27 and offer over $100,000 cash prizes. It will cover augmented reality experiences across different categories, including home fitness, art, gaming, video, outlets, and more. The winners in each category will receive a grand prize of $10,000. Those who finish second or third will also receive unlimited cash prizes, while honorable mentions will be able to get a free Nreal Light Dev set.

With its AR Jam event, Nreal aims to attract developers to create unique AR experiences for its smart glasses. The company is also creating a content fund to help develop AR content.
