Pants that can be included

During this year’s Netflix Geeked Week, master of horror Junji Ito announced that the streaming service is working on a new anthology series that will bring to life some of his stories that “have not yet been shown in animation.” With the manga revealing the likes of Hanging Balloons, a story centering on Tommy, and a tale centering on the cursed young man known as Suichi, now is the perfect time to dive into some of Ito’s other work to get an idea of what other stories might arrive as part of this story.

If you haven’t had the chance to see Junji Ito announce the new series, the official Netflix Geeked Twitter account has shared the new video that sees the horror master go into detail about the upcoming scary project:

Since Ito mentioned that these tales were never animated, that of course means that the likes of Uzumaki, Jyo, and the Model likely won’t make the cut, but there are plenty of other stories for the series to focus on.

Hellstar Remina is a strange story, even for Junji Ito, and given the area the manga covered, it really means something. First appearing on the scene in 2004, the mini-series focuses on the daughter of a scientist who discovers a rogue planet that is set on a collision course with planet Earth. With Remina trying to flee from the humankind she sees as responsible for the threat, Ito is able to convey some truly terrifying images with this one that will translate amazingly to the small screen.

What many would consider one of Junji Ito’s scariest stories, it’s amazing that this story didn’t work when it came to the original Junji Ito anthology series. The Enigma of Amigura Fault focuses on a mountainside full of human-sized holes “customized” for people, with a strange allure that draws people into the confined space. It’s a simple story but one that will have anyone with claustrophobia swooning in with an ending that is sure to send chills down the spine of anyone who encounters it.

Junji Ito’s army is so brutal that it’s hard to even share a picture of it, with the story arriving as a side story inside Hellstar Remina A posting and assassin’s vision of a loss that not only takes a life, but goes so far as to sew people and animals together. It’s a disturbing story to say the least, one that feels like Ito was the only one he could think of and put it to paper.

Junji Ito’s “Red Turtleneck” focuses on a simple enough, yet somewhat hilarious, story in which a young boy tries to keep his head on his shoulders after meeting a mysterious woman who is looking to add his head to his collection. The lengths a woman goes to to get the head of a hero at some point becomes so annoying that it might make anyone cringe, especially if you’re not a big fan of bugs.

Imagine Junji Ito’s experience on Freddy Krueger and then imagine that the mangaka was able to make said Nightmare Demon even more annoying than the prickly-toed slasher on Elm Street. Den of the Sleep Demon sees a young boy suffering from a mysterious personality trying to take control of the boy’s life, with the demon seeking to escape into the real world in one of the most disturbing ways. Needless to say, watching this story animated will surely make viewers crawl.
