Adobe is changing the way users access Photoshop. according to the edge (Opens in a new tab)The popular photo editing software is being rolled out as a free-to-use version that starts with select Canadian users.
Adobe currently offers a web version of the image editing software in other regions, but this version is designed for collaboration and offers only very basic features. The goal of the new “freemium” version is to give users access to what Abobe calls “basic functions” in Photoshop, including the ability to enhance edges and curves and transform Smart Objects.
Like the current version of Photoshop on the web (Opens in a new tab) This “free” version will work via a web browser and require an Adobe account. We expect the new “freemium” version to run on Chrome and Edge browsers only, as these are the browsers that Photoshop on the web currently supports.
Freemium Photoshop: Advantages and Disadvantages
There are probably two main advantages to this new “freemium” version of Photoshop. First, it’s (partially) free. Since all current versions require a subscription or are incredibly limited, this should be a huge boost for any user who wants to really dive into the software but isn’t sure you’ll want to pay a subscription fee.
The second advantage is that since this works on Chrome, it brings Photoshop to a file Chromebook way more powerful than ever. Once this starts, Chrome OS users will no longer rely on Photoshop Express for photo editing. This also opens the software to users on budget devices with less power than is required to run the desktop version of the app, including students.
Of course, there is a catch. This is described as “freemium” by Adobe – not free. This means that some features will remain paywall-protected until Adobe can eventually get users to sign up for them Photoshop CC. Additionally, while the new version of Photoshop on Web will work on Chrome browsers, it is not expected to work on mobile devices.
What versions of Photoshop are currently available?
Free Photoshop Options
As mentioned earlier, there are technically two free versions of Photoshop, but neither of them has the full set of features. Photoshop on Web is currently a collaborative tool but is being expanded to run “the core functions of Photoshop.” Photoshop Express allows mobile users on Android and iOS to enhance, crop, and share photos. In terms of mobile apps, it’s a good choice, but it’s nowhere near as powerful as Photoshop CC.
Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements It is Adobe’s consumer version of Photoshop. While Photoshop CC is not limited to professionals, it sometimes serves more than the average user needs. Photoshop Elements still allows users to have a powerful photo editing tool without paying for features they may not need. Plus, unlike Photoshop CC, Photoshop Elements is a one-time purchase – It is currently for sale (Opens in a new tab).
Photoshop CC
To access the full Photoshop CC desktop app, you’ll need to sign up for it Adobe (Opens in a new tab). There is currently a “Photography” plan with Photoshop and Lightroom for $9.99 per month and 20 GB of storage, plus a $19.99 per month version that increases cloud storage to 1 TB. There’s also a Photoshop-only version for $20.99 per month, or $54.99 per month users have access to every app Adobe’s Creative Cloud offers.
If you’re not ready to commit to a subscription but want to experience the full power of Photoshop CC, There is a free trial (Opens in a new tab) For both Photoshop CC and the entire Creative Cloud suite of apps.
If you’re still not sure about sticking with Adobe photo editor, there are some great features Photoshop alternatives. However, with this shift to the “freemium” model, Photoshop is on the cusp of becoming more accessible to everyone.
