Riva’s past revealed

Episode 5 of Obi-Wan Kenobi devoted much of her running time to Reva as it delves into the character’s past.

The episode sees the Inquisitor leading the Imperial attack on Jabiim after she managed to put a tracker on Princess Leia’s robot in the previous chapter.

Trying to pause for a while, Obi-Wan asked to speak with Reva and during their conversation he began to piece together how she knew Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker.

Kenobi deduces that Reva must have been young in the Jedi Temple when Command 66 began and would have seen Anakin leading the attack.

She validates this and explains that she only managed to survive by playing dead among the corpses of her fellow Padawans to avoid detection.

Obi-Wan uses this newfound information to find out that Reva is not serving Vader by being a detective but is in fact looking for an opportunity to kill him.

Where was Obi-Wan Kenobi during Order 66?

During their opening conversation, a grieving Riva asked Obi-Wan where he was during the Anakin massacre and how he could have let his disciple fall into the dark side. Kenobi, overwhelmed with guilt, does not respond.

But fans of previous movies will remember that Obi-Wan was on the planet Utapau Revenge of the Sith Where he is on a mission to find the separatist leader, General Grievous.

While Obi-Wan manages to get rid of Grievous and end the Clone Wars in the process, the moment also leads to Darth Sidious summoning Order 66.

While Obi-Wan and his forces were looking to finally defeat the robot army in Utapau, the Kenobi clone soldiers turned on him, just as they had done with the Jedi across the galaxy.

Thousands of Jedi were slaughtered in the Purge but Obi-Wan was one of the few who managed to survive.

He wouldn’t have been able to save Riva in the Jedi Temple as he was at the other end of the galaxy.

Longtime Star Wars fans have pointed to the last meeting between Anakin and Obi-Wan before Kenobi left for Utapau, with many saying that if Anakin went with him, Darth Sidious wouldn’t be able to sway him to join the Dark Side.

Fans react to the plight of Riva 66’s request

A lot of mystery has surrounded Riva’s character since she was introduced to Obi-Wan Kenobi but now that episode 5 has revealed her painful past, leading fans to see the character in a new light.

“Seeing flashbacks from Anakin in Order 66 really scared me, Riva’s face and story, seeing her friends get slaughtered…everything overwhelms you so well that you legitimately feel scared.”

While another felt Riva’s story deserved further exploration: “I’m not going to lie, I’d be interested in Riva’s spin-off that takes her life after Order 66 and how she’s become a detective over the years.”

This fan noted how Riva’s plan to betray Vader would never work: “Something so messy is that if Riva was young during Order 66, most of her training came at Inquisitorius, probably from Vader himself. And he might have trained them not to be able to beat him about intent.”

Another fan on Twitter discovered a flaw in Riva’s reasoning: “So Reva blames Kenobi for what Anakin did during Order 66, instead of blaming Sith Lord Anakin is a disciple. The man who orders Vader to kill everyone. The man who ordered Order 66.”

Finally, this fan was deeply moved by the episode memories of Order 66: “The pre-mask shot of Vader/Anakin during Order 66 looking at Riva as he killed the young ones and promptly replaced by a shot of Vader standing over Riva in his mask while they were fighting in the present was good.”
