How a South Florida theme inspired ‘Father of the Bride’ wedding dress

In the reboot of “Father of the Bride,” now streaming on HBO Max, costume designer Caroline Esselin realized she wouldn’t imitate any of the film’s previous incarnations when it came to designing the wedding dress worn by Sofia (Adria Arjona). Instead, I drew inspiration from the new movie setting in Miami and the city’s vibrant style.

This time around, Andy Garcia is the main character who has to deal with his daughter’s marriage and is determined to pay for her wedding. Directed by Jazz Alazraki, the film is about a sprawling Cuban-American family who marries a wealthy Mexican-American Sophia.

Sophie’s sister Cora (Isabella Merced) is a budding fashion designer tasked with helping create her wedding gown. “We’ve done things through her lens when it comes to ball gowns and bridesmaid dresses,” says Esselin.

Since Cora has a bold fashion sense, Eselin incorporated touches like oversized pop art buttons on the sides of her bridesmaids’ dresses—”a fun piece of art you might see in South Beach,” she says. The wedding gown itself featured subtle vertical stripes.

But the dress underwent a makeover in the movie: The dress Sophia begins with is not the one she ends with. “Initially, we built the dress without the sleeves because we knew it was going to be the final product,” Eselin says.

However, Eselin fiddled with puffed sleeves in the first iteration of the gown, sizing different sizes. “We also experimented with different lengths of sleeves and kept the fine tuning. I found this beautiful organza for the sleeves, and that’s when it all came together,” although it didn’t go on like that.

The woolly dress wasn’t the only one featured in the movie. Her mother, Ingrid (Gloria Estefan) appeared in a flashback. Therefore, Eselin turned to Latin designers. “That was a Carolina Herrera dress. We wanted to use a lot of Latin designers all the time,” Eselin says. “She gave us an idea of where Ingrid was in her life — her beginnings. She’s been put together, polished and she’s had her dreams. We see, as soon as the wedding plans start, she finds herself again, so we wanted to reflect that in her appearance.”

In the end, fashion designer Caroline Esselin removed the sleeves from the wedding dress
