Celtics legend Bill Russell never gave up hope for Banner 18 in 2023

Bill Russell believes the Boston Celtics can raise their 18th championship crest next season.

After falling to the Golden State Warriors in six matches, Bill Russell Don’t lose hope when it comes to the beloved Boston Celtics hoisting their 18th championship banner next year.

Boston has definitely been a battle test this season. The Celtics defeated the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat playoff series before losing to Golden State in the NBA Finals. As Boston’s last league championship approaches 15 years ago, the greatest winner the sport has ever seen believes his favorite team has what it takes to get it done during next year’s race.

Although the Celtics will be a great team again next season, the Eastern Conference is no joke.

On the optimistic side, there are no truly elite teams in the NBA today. Not to say Boston is about to become one, but there is no absolute power, but the other 29 teams will have to hopelessly navigate. Boston won two NBA Finals games with first-time coach Aimee Odoka. The experience this young pulp gained was invaluable. They have a real chance next season.

However, Boston plays in the toughest of the two conferences. All three teams they beat en route to the NBA Finals (Brooklyn, Milwaukee, Miami) can win the East next season. Other teams, like the Philadelphia 76ers or the Toronto Raptors, will make things interesting. Even other Eastern Conference teams, like the Atlanta Hawks or the Cleveland Cavaliers, aren’t easy.

It all really comes down to Boston’s top player Jaysom Tatum taking another quantum leap in his game. He should play at the highest level next season and become the undisputed top five player in the league. If he can become Boston’s version of what the Bucks have in Giannis Antikonmo, maybe the Celtics will raise their 18th championship crest as Russell said?

While Boston should be in a competitive position to win the league title next year, the Celtics are not the favorites.
