Ex-Nintendo chief doubts plans for more mini consoles

Nintendo hasn’t announced any plans to build more mini systems as it did with the NES and SNES, but according to former Nintendo chief Reggie Fils-Aimé, that’s unlikely to happen. The former president of Nintendo of America recently said in an interview where he discussed the timing of those classic console releases and why, based on what Nintendo is doing now, he doesn’t feel like mini consoles are coming back.

Fils-Aimé spoke with cnet about his new book, Game Disruption: From the Bronx to the Top of Nintendo, among other topics related to the gaming industry. These are pretty naturally inclined towards Nintendo-centric conversations due to his experience with the little consoles that pop up during conversations as well.

Looking at the release of Nintendo Classic consoles, Fils-Aimé said the minis came at a “critical moment in time” when the Wii U wasn’t running that hot and the Nintendo Switch wasn’t ready yet. By comparison, he said he would feel the focus now would be on providing the appeal of “legacy content” to reimagined consoles through Nintendo’s online services.

He said, “Will it come back? Will there be other physical chests with ancient content? I don’t think so.” “If I were to come back to Nintendo for a day, I would focus more on: How does the company take advantage of all of its great content, and deliver it to the consumer through the online Nintendo experience?”

Nintendo has already ramped up its online offering with things like more NES and SNES games available through Nintendo Switch Online as well as Nintendo 64 games offered through the online service expansion option. He said he’s looking to the future of older Nintendo offerings like Nintendo 64 games that will be delivered online instead of these minigames.

“What they’re doing is… they’re putting out some N64 content, they’re working with other platform owners to get some of that old content out,” he said. “But there is an opportunity. Nintendo still has more N64 content to take advantage of. And they have GameCube content to take advantage of. And they have Wii content. And I see this future of digitally presented content for you, the consumer, as a burgeoning opportunity that I would like to continue to take advantage of.”
