Sadie sinks into Stranger Things in Max, The Letters and Taylor Swift

brake alert: This story contains spoilers from Season Four, Vol. 1 of “Stranger Things” is currently streaming on Netflix.

Sadie Sink’s Max actually goes through it in Season 4 of “Stranger Things.” After she loses her brother, Billy (Dacre Montgomery), in the third season finale, the new season begins to tear her apart with guilt about what happened.

“She just asks herself all these questions, and blames herself,” Sinek says. diverse. “It’s not necessarily because she’s mourning the loss of their relationship, but it’s more persuasive to herself, in a way, that she is responsible for all the terrible things that have happened in her life – and the domino effect that Billy’s death had on her family and everyone around her.”

On top of that, one of Max’s best friends, one (Millie Bobby Brown), has left town. She broke up with boyfriend Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin); She has visions of a real monster.

Here, Sink — now 20 — talks about how she came into headspace this season, shares her thoughts on what’s in those sentimental letters Max wrote to her friends, and reveals if we’ll see more of Max’s mom.

When the season started, Max wasn’t in a good place. How did you benefit from the darkness you were going through?

I’ve been with this character all my formative years. So I really know her pretty well at this point. But we can never really take advantage of that kind of vulnerability in the show that much, because it’s so fast-paced that there’s a lot going on. So having a story that taps into some of its emotional aspects and exposes some of its weaknesses – which we haven’t really seen in previous seasons – was very exciting. In terms of preparation, a lot of the season was about inner thoughts and thoughts eating from you. You do not share with anyone.

So in order to understand it a bit more and get into her headspace this way, I would blog here and there, just write the entries like it is. What I wasn’t planning on but what really helped me get into that mindset was isolating the shutdown. After closing, I was 18, so when I went back to filming, I was living on my own. It was a new experience, and I was on my own for a long time. I think it helped me in a strange way, there was a connection between me and Max this year with me as I live alone and Max lives in such extreme isolation.

Max obviously misses Eleven because she has these superpowers, but I feel like she must also miss the fact that she has a real boyfriend – and now she has her ex-husband and all his friends.

yes! I think the cool thing about Max and Eleven’s relationship from Season 3 is that Eleven is clearly different from most of the girls you see. Max is also different from a lot of girls you see, so they have found each other and they work really well together. I like to think that it was one of the first female friendships Max really had. Until this kind of goes away, I think it was just really bad timing. Max would have benefited from having someone like Eleven, who she would probably have been comfortable opening up to. Eleven will likely benefit from owning a Max while navigating this new environment and bullying her world. It was helpful to have someone like that to push her through it. Both of them can help each other a lot.

“Dear Billy” is an emotional episode and you did well on your end. But Billy wasn’t a great guy – he was a big deal. Do you think she has completely forgiven him?

It’s tough, because it caused the most pain in her life for a really long time. Nor did they have a brother and sister relationship, or any strong relationship between them. I think what really haunts her is the fact that she thinks it was her fault in some way – she might have thought before, ‘I just want him to go’. So for him to actually leave, and to do nothing while watching him die, she’s asking herself all these questions and blaming herself.

She didn’t have an outlet, and she had no one to tell her it wasn’t her fault. No one was there, and no one fully understood it. So it’s a really lonely battle you’re fighting.

We got a glimpse of her relationship with her mother. Is this something we will see more of?

I’m not sure. Not at any point on this show do we get a little glimpse into what the parents are doing in season 4, I think it’s a lot of fun because in season 1, the dads were nowhere to be seen! They did not know what these children were doing in their daily routine at home. So any time we see a relationship with a child and their parent, it’s really exciting to dive into.

For Max specifically, I think it’s heartbreaking when you see this state her mother is in, and how absent she is during all of this – Max does a really good job of hiding it. But not having a mother able to recognize the pain their child is going through because they themselves are in so much pain, it was sad to see this dynamic.

Do you know what Max’s messages to her friends say?

Me, no! In my spare time and daydreaming, I have an idea of what you probably want to say to each specific person. I don’t know anything about the plans for Season 5, but I’m eager to see what’s out there. I want to have a scene where the messages are read. I think Max is pretty typical, for her to literally look death in her eyes, but she still can’t tell someone face to face, how much that means to her or have an honest conversation with someone. The fact that they have to put them in characters and not even exist when they are being read, it was like, yes, like that adds. But I’d love to see what’s inside these messages.

David Harbor recently told me he knows the end of Hopper’s story, because he kept asking and said he needed to figure out how to play it. Do you know how Max’s story ends?

No, but maybe I should use that font! I don’t know, I kind of like not knowing where her story is going and I’m surprised when I read it, because Max herself doesn’t know what’s going to happen to her. I guess, why should I do? I really have no idea where to go with anything. So I will be excited to read those texts!

Finally, she starred in the music video directed by Taylor Swift “All Too Well: A Short Film”. How does Taylor Swift’s fanbase compare to Stranger Things’ fanbase?

I think the one thing you both have in common is that both of your fan bases are very passionate and loyal. As for ‘Stranger Things’, it’s been around since season one and the age range is amazing. It is just a global phenomenon. And the same with Taylor Swift! They are really similar in many ways.
