In this week’s MLB Power rankings, the New York Yankees continue to assert themselves as baseball’s president while the Detroit Tigers may be the biggest disappointment.
The division between the best teams in Major League Baseball and the worst is very clear. There are a few teams trapped in the middle of the MLB Power rankings hoping to make it into the 12 field heading into the playoffs. Some of these teams have made some big progress in the past week compared to where they ranked the last time we checked in.
The MLB season is a long one and everyone now has less than 100 games left on the schedule to steer their team in the right direction or start thinking about drafting next year.
How do your 30 teams stack up this week?
30) MLB Power Rankings: Washington Nationals
No one is worse off in the National League this year than the Washington Nationals. Even some of the usual suspects who will finish at or near the bottom aren’t as poor as the team that entered last year with some hopes of making the playoffs.
There is a very short list of positive things to say about this year’s team. Josh Bell has been really good. This is where it all ends. Their showing has been the main weak point all year, but a recent slowdown from most hitters has put them last on this week’s list.
29) MLB Power Rankings: Auckland Athletics
At least the Citizens have won a championship lately. Oakland Athletics have not won in decades. Depending on how the front office sells every bit they can, the championship drought should follow them to whichever city they end up calling home next.
Despite their poor track record, Athletic got some promising offers initially and they have some good pieces to sell. The glaring negative thing is that even if athletics were able to gain good odds for anyone, they likely won’t have enough talent to recruit these players to do much anytime soon.
28) MLB Power Rankings: Kansas City Royals
The Kansas City Royals are one of those usual suspects who finish near the bottom of the league. They have met expectations this year and that’s a problem. Where does this privilege go? It looks like they’ve taken a 30-year break from playing any form of competitive baseball. With few signs of a quick turnaround, it could be another three long decades before they play baseball again.
Kansas City suffers from the same problems as the rest of the worst baseball clubs. They don’t have a lot of good hitters and their best performing bars are less. This is another year of development for young players. Any victories they can muster are a bonus.
27) MLB Power Rankings: Detroit Tigers
When it comes to the MLB Power rankings, the Detroit Tigers should be penalized a bit more for expectations. This was supposed to be the year they started at least finishing near the middle. A completely absent offense that makes them among the worst clubs in Major League Baseball.
If there’s one thing Tigers fans can feel, it’s at least Miguel Cabrera’s hit rate high. He has quite a bit of strength at this point but has shown that he can still collect hits. They have received some promising promotions from guys like Tarik Skubal and Beau Brieske. Riley Greene does a great job early on. Maybe next year?
26) MLB Power Rankings: Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds got off to such a bad start that their record barely scratches the surface of what this team really is. But there are a few guys to turn to to get an idea of how bad things can be. Notably, their best hitter was Brandon Drury. You won’t win much when that’s the case.
The Reds’ show crew was just as bad with a few outstanding players. Luis Castillo helped raise his trading stock. Savior Jeff Hoffman could have a few suitors looking for some Bullpen answers, too. Reds fans shouldn’t be too concerned about this year’s trading deadline. You should aim to see them next season – or maybe even the next.
