Spice Addicts have reason to celebrate as Dune 2 has been confirmed, with Legendary Pictures publishing the news that Dune Part Two is happening. Some new amazing cast members have been added. But if you see Dune by Denis Villeneuve – and Spoiler alert, we’ll look at the end of this movie – It was clear that Dune Part II is coming.
The desire to make Dune II has been around for a while. Villeneuve revealed, in a presentation attended by Tom’s Guide staff, that his intention was not only to make Dune 2, but to follow it up with Dune Christ. The films will be basically a trilogy.
Dune 2 . release date
Dune 2 is scheduled to take place on October 20, 2023, according to Limit (Opens in a new tab).
Villeneuve is already working hard on the script. In August 2021 interview with movie total (Opens in a new tab)said the director, “I’m writing [Part Two] Now, and I feel like I’m 8 years old again…that’s very uncommon for me. It’s the first time I’ve experienced that where I’m watching one of my films, and I have a moment of deep gratitude and deep joy, and I say, ‘Thank you, life, for letting me bring that to the screen.'”
Dune Part Two has been confirmed on Twitter by Legendary Pictures’ official account (Opens in a new tab) On October 26, he tweeted the image above, with the caption, “This is just the beginning… Thanks to those who have tried dunemovie so far, and those who will be gone in the coming days and weeks. We’re excited to continue the journey!”
Dune 2 team and crew
Four new members have been added from Dune 2, per Limit (Opens in a new tab) Report. Léa Seydoux plays Madame Margot – the wife of Benny Gessert to Count Hasimir Weinring. Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Austin Butler also joined.
In a tweet announcing Dune Part 2, Legendary has featured the cast members below in the photo (you need to open the tweet, click “Dune and 7 others”, to almost confirm their return (which was already very expected).
The only problem is that the tweet named two actors (David Dastmalchian as Peter de Vries and Sharon Duncan Brewster as Dr. Litt Caines) whose characters died in the first movie. Their characters could return to Flashbacks in Dune Part 2, but that’s not certain.
The legendary has also tagged Hans Zimmer, so we can expect his booming score to come back as well.
Two big decisions loom on Dune Part Two: Feyd-Rautha, Paul’s opponent (played by Sting in David Lynch’s Dune) and Alia, Paul’s baby sister.
Again, though, beware of spoilers below, as the events of the rest of Dune and Dune Messiah enter.
- Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides
- Zendaya as Shani
- Dave Bautista as Gloso Rabanne, nephew of Baron Harkonnen
- Javier Bardem as Stillgar, the leader of the Fremen tribe
Also expect Rebecca Ferguson to return as Paul Penny Jessert’s mother, Mrs. Jessica. Stellan Skarsgård is also likely to return as Baron Vladimir Harkonin. We don’t expect the return of Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac), though flashbacks are always possible.
Jason Momoa could return very well as Duncan Idaho, as this character is returned as a clone. Also, Josh Brolin will likely return as Gurney Halleck, since he was not actually killed in the Harkonnens raid on Atreides Castle in Arrakis. Thofer Hawat (Stephen McKinley Henderson) is likely to return.
It might end up with more characters from other dune movies in time.
Dune 2’s plot and story, and the end of Dune, explained
To talk about Dune Part Two, we must first look at what happened at the end of Dune. Paul and Jessica, both fugitives from the Harkonins, finally meet Freeman, so Paul can finally meet Chaney, whom he saw in his visions. They are led by Stilgar, who accepts the two. James, the Fremen tribesman, does not accept the invitation, and faces Paul to death – which Jamis loses.
This moment cannot be overlooked, as the voice in Paul’s visions of his battle with Jamis said “Paul Atreides must die, for Kwisatz Haderach to rise… When you kill a soul, you take your life.” While Paul may have been involved in the deaths of the men on the plane when he used The Voice to free his mother from the muzzle, Jamis was the first person to kill young Paul in one-on-one combat, representing a loss of Paul’s humanity.
What comes next is the question of how Paul would respond to the Freemans’ devotion to him as a messianic figure. A vision of him and Chaney indicates that he sees the future as their leader in their wars, but Paul at present does not seem ready or interested in such a path.
Meanwhile in Arrakis, things are back in House Harkonnen under control. The baron hands command of the planet to his nephew Raban, but he will be able to make enough money from the spice trade to offset their contracts with Sardaokar to fight their war on their behalf.
Paul will eventually meet his new younger sister Alia and new rival Vid-Rutha, but we’ll save their details for another time.
