In his monologue on Monday’s broadcast of “The Late Show,” host Stephen Colbert spoke about the recent news that a field production team for his late-night show had been arrested at the Capitol while filming a comic strip involving the corrupt doll Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. .
“how was your weekend?” Colbert joked at the top of his opening monologue. “I definitely had an interesting one, because some of my employees had an unforgettable team.”
“Triumph has offered to come down to DC to interview some members of Congress to highlight some of the January 6 hearings,” Colbert continued. “I said, sure, if you can convince anyone to talk to you. Because, and please don’t take this as an insult, you are a puppet.”
On June 16, seven people working for “The Late With Stephen Colbert” were arrested for a shooting at an unauthorized location in Congress. Among the seven people arrested was Robert Smigel, the writer and comedian behind the canine character of Triumph.
Capitol Police released a statement about the incident, saying, “The building was closed to visitors and these individuals were determined to be part of a group directed by the USCP to leave the building earlier in the day. They have been charged with illegal entry. This is an active criminal investigation, It may result in additional criminal charges being brought after consultation with the US Attorney.”
“After they were done with the interviews, they were doing some last minute puppet shows and makeup in one of the aisles, when the Capitol Police approached Triumph and people with me and took them into custody—which, in fact, was no surprise,” he continued, before referring to the ongoing congressional hearings on the events of Rebellion January 6, 2021. “The Capitol Police are more cautious than they were, say, 18 months ago, and for very good reason. If you don’t know what that reason is, I know the news network you’re watching.”
Colbert continued to stress that matters were resolved as professionally as possible, while acknowledging that the experience was not pleasant for its employees. The late-night presenter also denied the comparisons between the arrests of the production team and the arrests of individuals during the uprising.
“To draw any parity between a rioter storming the Capitol to prevent electoral votes being counted and a toy dog nibbling a cigar is a shameful and hideous insult to the memory of all who died,” Colbert said.
CBS had previously offered a statement about the incident, stating that the interviews were “approved and prearranged by congressional aides for the members interviewed.”
As hearings about the January 6 riots in the Capitol continue, the incident came at a time of heightened security and tension inside the halls of Congress.
