In August last year, Google confirmed that it would eliminate Android Auto for phone screens on Android 12. With the first stable release of Android 12, the company pulled the plug on Android Auto for phone screens on devices running Android 12. However, the company did not Removes the feature for those still using older versions. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case, and Google has finally shut down Android Auto for phone screens for all users.
According to a recent report from 9to5GoogleEarlier this month, Google began showing the following notification in Android Auto to phone screens. But the company did not provide an exact closing date at that time.
Android Auto for phone screen will stop working soon
It looks like Google implemented the change this week, as users can no longer access Android Auto for phone screens on devices running Android 11 or earlier. Even if the app is installed on your device, you will be redirected to the Android Auto settings page, which clearly states that the platform is now only available for car screens. The change reportedly started showing up for some users earlier this week, and it now appears to be live for all devices running older versions of Android.
Fortunately, Google already has an alternative to this feature – the driving mode of the Google Assistant. First announced at I/O 2019, Google Assistant Driving Mode rolled out widely last year and received a new home screen UI in September 2021. If you haven’t tried it yet, you can access it by simply asking the Assistant to “Turn on mode” drive” or say, “Hey Google, let’s drive.” This is what it looks like:
