It’s NBA draft night which means the trade winds will turn and deals will be struck that change the future of franchises throughout the league.
Like a tree falling in the woods when there’s no one around to hear it, is it really the NBA draft without a commercial onslaught?
Perhaps more than neat suits and actual players being drafted, there are few things synonymous with the NBA draft than the deals happening throughout the night of the event. Due to league rules, the trade is only official after the draft is completed, but the safest bet in all sports is that at least one or two names called on the podium tonight will not play for the team making the selection.
The question is not if Night trade project will happen what or what effect will it?
Charlotte struck a draft night trade in 1996 that sent her first pick to the Los Angeles Lakers for veteran star Vlad Divak. The only problem was that the first round pick was Kobe Bryant. In 1998 the Dallas Mavericks traded Pat Garrity with the Milwaukee Bucks for Dirk Nowitzki’s rights, and in 1987 the Chicago Bulls traded the rights to the Olden Polynes and a future first-round and second-round draft with the Sonics for the rights. For Scottie Pippen.
All of these deals moved future Hall of Famers to teams they would help win tournaments for.
Most recently, the Mavericks and the Hawks have replaced Trae Young and Luka Donicic, moves that catapulted the two teams to the conference finals within the first few years of the deal. So the question is not whether or not we’ll see tonight’s deal, how are we going to look at it again in half a decade and beyond?
