The Seattle Seahawks are one step closer to trading Baker Mayfield for the Cleveland Browns, or so it seems.
The Seahawks chased Russell Wilson out of the season, dealing with the Denver Broncos for Drew Lock and draft picks. Although they haven’t spent any of their picks this year on a long-term replacement for Wilson, they could make a deal for Mayfield, who is readily available in Cleveland.
The issue in dealing with Baker will be his contract status – Seattle would prefer not to pay his hefty 2022 salary, and make him a free agent remaining. The solution to that would be to sign him to a less lucrative deal once he reaches Emerald City.
Seahawks: Baker Mayfield trade on the horizon
Dealing with Mayfield’s money – or at least talking about finances with Brown – is the last major hurdle for both sides. Seattle doesn’t think enough of Mayfield to pay him as one of the best quarterbacks from his rookie class. Meanwhile, Cleveland doesn’t want to bet the former No. 1 overall pick for nothing.
However, the longer Brown waits, the more likely they are to lose him for…nothing.
ESPN’s Josina Anderson Shed some light on this situation:
“I’ve been told the #Seahawks still have a high level of interest in acquiring QB Baker Mayfield and behind the scenes are open to a contractual extension, according to the league source. I also know that the process of gathering information and insights on Mayfield is still ongoing.”
Assuming the Seahawks eventually came to the conclusion that Mayfield started the quarterback material, he would be sent to Seattle. Details haven’t been announced yet, but odds are it’s mostly financial at this point.
