Apple Music revealed its best tracks and trends of the year so far with its mid-year report highlighting strong and long-lasting music trends and songs. Among those with the best songs are Future, Harry Styles, Jack Harlow, Glass Animals, Bad Bunny, and Gayle.
Among the songs recognized is Future Wait for U. Drake and Tems from his ninth studio album, “I’ve Never Loved You” — which since its May 3 release has spent more weeks at number one than any other single in the future. Harry Styles’ “As It Was” follows from “Harry’s House”, breaking the record for most first-day streams for a song released in 2022.
Harlow’s “First Class” was credited for “promoting Jack Harlow to a streaming star.” In the two months following the release of “First Class” from his album “Come Home the Kids Miss You,” Harlow’s broadcast on Apple Music worldwide nearly quadrupled. It also holds the record for most first-day streams worldwide for a hip-hop song released in 2022.
A year after climbing to the top 40 on Apple Music’s Top 100, Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves” has become a mainstay on Apple’s Top 10 daily charts. According to data shared by Apple Music, Heat Waves has shocked the band’s streams by 330% in the past 18 months.
Bad Bunny’s song “Titi Me Pregunto” from his fifth album “Un Verano Sin Ti” is best known for its influence in the history of Latin music on Apple Music. It broke two Apple Music records worldwide, “helping Latinos see their biggest day in Apple Music history.” Finally, Jill’s “abcdefu” was recognized as one of the biggest singles of the first half of 2022. The track was the pop-rock singer’s debut and helped increase her total streams year over year by 500%.
As for trends, Apple Music highlighted Gen Z for its role in the evolution of introspective pop stories. “One of the things we’ve noticed about some of the young pop music community is how surprisingly adult they seem,” the company wrote in a press release.
With Harlow’s Fergie’s “First Class” chosen as one of the best tracks of the year, Bad Boy’s style is back in sampling. The iconic voices of Bad Boy Records (Diddy, Faith Evans, Notorious BIG) during the late ’90s returned to the charts with Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” — which stands for “Hey! DJ” — and “Big Energy” lato, which Refers to Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy” and “The Genius of Love” by Tom Tom.
This year, Apple Music also referred to BTS as the “biggest pop group, period,” as they recognized K-pop’s continued global expansion. “[BTS’] The success has also fueled a broader interest in the genre, and a growing awareness of other artists who continue to push it forward,” Apple Music stated in a press release. Maybe they’ll drop a K at the end and call it what it is: a pop.”
Also on the trend list are Afrobeats, Alté and Amapiano – all of which are becoming increasingly popular internationally. And last but not least, drum and bass trends have also seen a revival recently according to Apple Music. “You can hear it in the work of artists who launched TikTok like PinkPantheress, Piri, Tommy Villiers and Yaz – their songs in their bedroom set the tunes in playful directions.”
