T“Elvis,” directed by Baz Luhrmann, reached number one at the box office during its opening weekend at $30.5 million, surprisingly tied for the top with Top Gun: Maverick.
With a running time of nearly three hours, the film made nearly twice the average for a musical biopic, according to David A. Gross of Entertainment Research.
The film follows Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) as he rises to fame and fortune with his exploitative boss Coronel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks).
“Elvis” has garnered great reviews from critics and viewers, with one analyst saying it’s a hit music scene full of dance and sexual tension.

Top Gun: Maverick is the highest-grossing movie of 2022, becoming the first Tom Cruise movie to gross $1 billion worldwide.
Jurassic World Dominion reached number three with box office sales of $26.4 million.
Black Phone, which starred Ethan Hawke as a serial killer, earned $23.4 million in its opening weekend, taking fourth place.
Meanwhile, Lightyear had a disappointing opening weekend with a same-sex kiss scene, grossing just $17.7 million in its second week, enough for a fifth spot.
