The movie Valkyrie from Tessa Thompson quickly became a favorite among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character got a badass and hilarious intro in Taika Waititi Motorcycle rentalAnd while her journey on the big screen has only just begun, it’s been great to see her go from being a drunken and overwhelmed warrior to becoming the King of New Asgard. There is so much to love, and the appreciation will definitely increase with her role in the future Thor: Love and Thunderbut an interesting question about her still remains: What is her real name?
This information has yet to be revealed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there is an answer, according to Tessa Thompson… and she’s not quite ready to reveal what it is to the world.
This interesting suspense was extracted this weekend during LA Press Day for Thor: Love and Thunder, where I had the opportunity to sit down with Tessa Thompson and discuss her latest performance in the Valkyrie. I opened up the interview and asked if she knew her character’s real name (or if she had one), and she gave a great response:
For those not fully familiar with their Norse mythology, “Valkyrie” is not a word normally used to describe an individual, but rather a member of a particular group – that is, mystical women who visit deceased Norse soldiers who died in battle and accompanied them to either Fólkvangr or Valhalla ( Two different versions of the afterlife). When the character known as Valkyrie was introduced in the pages of Marvel Comics by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, he appeared as a member of a warrior group that overshadowed the Valkyrior, and was given the name Asgardian Brunnhilde.
Based on this information, one could assume that Brunnhilde is the actual name of Valkyrie from Tessa Thompson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe… but this seems to be one situation where he might dust off an old chestnut, “You know what they say about the assumption.” You should know at this point that not everything from the comics is canon. It’s not impossible that Valkyrie’s name in the MCU is Brunnhilde, but the actor playing the character certainly isn’t willing to commit to that, and it looks like the real answer to the mystery may be more complicated than we think.
While we wait for the big reveal of the character’s name (maybe something to explore in a solo movie?), fans can appreciate the badass and powerful King Valkyrie by counting down the days until her return to the big screen — something very coming like that. Starring as part of an impressive lineup of Marvel heroes that also includes Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, and Tessa Thompson is back. Thor: Love and Thunder, which is less than two weeks to reach theaters. The blockbuster movie has already gained some pretty buzz after its premiere last week, and it will be showing everywhere on July 8.
