RLJE Movies, Shudder Buy Alien Invasion Story “Slash/Back”

RLJE Films and Shudder have acquired Nyla Innuksuk’s Slash/Back, an alien invasion thriller that premiered at this year’s SXSW.

The two companies are business units of AMC Networks. The film is expected to hit theaters and on VOD/Digital before airing on Shudder later this year. Shudder focuses on horror, thrillers, and supernatural content, so the attraction is clear.

“Slash/Back” is the debut of director Inoxuk, who also co-wrote the film with Ryan Cavan (“Secret Goat”). It stars young actors including Tasiana Shirley, Alexis Wolf, Nalagos Ellsworth, and Chelsea Brusky.

“Brilliant effects, strong female leadership, and a hilarious and adventurous story make this film a movie we know audiences will love,” said Mark Ward, Chief Acquisition Officer at RLJE Films.

Critics embraced the film after it debuted on SXSW, with diversePeter Debruge wrote, “Original director Nela Enoxuke imagined a thriller about an alien invasion that operates on multiple levels, empowering the community in which she created it.”

He went on to compare the film to the geek favorite, “Attack the Block,” adding that “…it seems bound to find a cult following, but it will mean most to the Inuit audience, for whom standing up to the invaders is more than just another genre and movie cliché. “.

“Slash/Back” is located in Pangnirtung, Nunavut, a quiet little village nestled in the mountains of Baffin Island in the Arctic Ocean, where the village opens with the awakening of a typical summer’s day. But for Maika and her savage friends, things change after they discover an alien invasion that threatens their hometown. Using makeshift weapons and their knowledge of horror movies, they are once again fighting against intruders.

“It has been a dream to make Slash/Back alongside my talented teenage actors in one of the most remote and beautiful places on the planet, and I am thrilled to partner with RLJE Films/Shudder to bring our quirky space movie to a larger scale,” said Inoksuk. With our new friends at RLJE Films/Shudder, fellow geeks we kind of really appreciate “Slash/Back” and all of its honest horror love.”

Innuksuk produced Slash/Back with Daniel Pekerman, Alex Ordanis, and Chris Yurkowitz of Good Question Media, as well as Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, Stacey Aglok MacDonald, and Ethan Lazar. Mark Ward and Betsy Rodgers of RLJE Films negotiated the deal with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers.
