Steam users were surprised by the unexpected discount

Steam Deck users were surprised by an unexpected hardware downgrade. Valve’s new on-demand laptop has plenty of power, especially if you get one of the premium models. As you’d expect, it comes with a decent SSD. With the PS5 focusing so heavily on its own dedicated SSD, and the Xbox Series X featuring a great SSD in its own right, more and more gamers are learning the importance of a decent SSD, which Steam Deck has, but the newer models already have a lower version. SSD compared to older models.

When Steam Deck was released, both the 256GB and 512GB models came with a PCI Express 3.0 x4 SSD. However, models are now shipped with a PCI Express 3.0 x2 SSD, which is a noticeable reduction. While this has been done, we don’t know. Valve hasn’t said a glimpse of a downgrade, but the changes have been confirmed via the Wayback Machine and the official Steam Deck website. The website states that the SSD specifications were changed in May, which means models produced since then will likely come with that reduction.

“Some 256GB and 512GB models ship with a PCIe Gen 3 x2 SSD. In our testing, we didn’t notice any impact on gaming performance between x2 and x4,” the site reads.

At the moment, there is some information missing, such as the impact of these on models, whether this will be the standard going forward, and why Valve made this change. It is likely that the answer to the last question will include production costs, but this has not been confirmed one way or the other.
