previous life: Joey Chestnut was born on November 25, 1983 in Vallejo, California. He got his start in the world of competitive eating in 2005 while still a student at San Jose State. One of Joey’s first major events was an asparagus eating contest. During this competition, Joey came in first after eating nearly six and a half pounds of fried asparagus in just 11.5 minutes.
professional transformation: In 2005, he entered his first, among what would become a lot, contest, Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. He took third place after swallowing 32 sausages. Sonya Thomas finished second with a score of 37. Takeru Kobayashi won with a score of 49.
Chestnut-eating stardom continued to rise, as she defeated Sonya Thomas at the Waffle House World Waffle Eating Championship later that year.
At the 2006 Nathan event, Kobayashi set the world record with a complete of 53 and 3/4. Joey finished second with a score of 52, which is a record in the United States.
In the 2007 competition, Joey took first prize for the first time with a 66 hot dog, beating Kobayashi with a score of 63.

Awards and other records: Competitive eating is a full-time job for Joey. He trains year-round by constantly fasting and stretching his stomach with protein, water and milk supplements. Throughout the year, Joey weighs between 210 and 225 pounds.
Joey holds records for eating boiled eggs (141 in eight minutes), hot dogs (70 in 10 minutes), Matsu balls (78 in eight minutes), hot dogs (69 in 10 minutes in the 2013 Nathan Competition), steaks (4.5 pounds plus sides in under nine minutes), pork ribs (13.76 pounds in 12 minutes) and asparagus (12.8 pounds in 10 minutes). On July 4, 2016, Joey ate 70 hot dogs. A year later he ate 72. A year later he ate a world record 74. In the 2019 Nathan competition, he took the 12th title with eating 71 dogs.
