The cast of ‘Blackbird’, Taron Edgerton remembers Ray Liotta at the premiere

True crime is all the madness on the small screen. Now, Blackbeard is looking to turn things around.

The series, starring Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser, aims to play mind games with its audience, as it pits a high school football star against a suspected serial killer. For Egerton, the show is more than just a thriller about a horrific crime, it’s a portrait of masculinity and how decisions men make “disturb the world.”

“You can watch it and learn something about what it means to be human,” Egerton said. diverse At the red carpet premiere of Apple TV + on Wednesday. “I think this show examines the kind of dark sides of humanity, but it’s still human and good nonetheless. If you want to be broad and talkative about it, I suppose, you know, we live in a world where horrible, outrageous, world decisions are made. They are usually made by men who think they know a lot. And this show is full of them!”

“Blackbeard” follows the true story of Jimmy Kane, a young man who is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison. Kane is given a choice: enter a maximum security prison and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Hauser), or stay put and serve his sentence in full. He chose the first, to begin a tense and frightening psychological thriller. Despite playing such an annoying and dark character, Hauser said the role did not specify him.

“I think I probably did. [take it home] “Unconsciously,” Hauser explained Wednesday night at the Regency Bruen Theater in Westwood, California. “I get really upset when the actors are like, ‘I played that role and it was so stressful that I messed up for 12 years. “It’s like, dude, chill out. It’s acting. There are people who do teaching jobs in underfunded schools, and they get paid $40,000 a year. You’re fine. Get a second therapist.”

The cast also paid tribute to co-star Ray Liotta, who died less than two months before the show began. Greg Kinnear did not shoot any scenes with Liotta, but he did encounter him several times on set. The legendary actor has been described as an absolute show stopper.

“He’s a great actor and a great person,” Kinnear said. “He was a good boy. Listen, I’d say he was cool no matter what — I mean he could read the phone book on this thing and I would say he’s cool — but I really think he’s cool at this in a way that’s going to turn people off.”

Hauser wore a T-shirt featuring Liotta’s “Field of Dreams” character, Shoeless Joe Jackson, in honor of the actor.

Dennis Lehane, presenter and writer of the series, adds: “He meant everything to us. I wrote him the part, and it was my dream to work with him. He was as good as advertised. He lifted all the boats, never took the same thing twice. He was a complete and outstanding professional. He was there to work. And then when he passed away, it was hard because our last conversation three weeks ago was about what we’re going to do next. We just hope the legacy continues at least through this performance.”
