Today’s biggest cycling race gets underway as the Paris chase begins, but exactly how long is the 2022 Tour de France and how many stages are there this year?

One of the great sporting events begins when the flag is waved at the 2022 Tour de France – in Copenhagen, Denmark.

It is customary for the final test of endurance to start outside France, with this year’s race also making its way through Belgium and Switzerland before finishing in France.

The finish, as it always has, will be on the Champs-Elysees in the procession race as one of the team leaders looks to add his name to the list of winners.

But how long is the 2022 Tour de France? How many stages and what is the longest stage?

How long is the 2022 Tour de France?

2022 Tour de France 2068 miles – or 3,328 kilometers. It will run between July 1 and July 24 as the riders prepare for a mix of hills, mountains and time trials in an effort to get to Paris first.

In recent years, the Tour de France has been around 2,100 miles (about 3,550 kilometres) long, oscillating on both sides.

In 2021, Tadej Pogacar took his second straight win on his tour of 2,121.6 miles – or 3,414.4 km. It took 82 hours 56 minutes and 36 seconds.

The longest run ever was in 1926 when Lucien Boisy won 3,570 miles or 5,745 kilometers in 238 hours 44 minutes 25 seconds.

How many stages of the race?

In total, there are 21 stages in the 2022 Tour de France.

It is divided between seven hills, six mountain and six flats with two time trials as well.

The two trials of time effectively end the event as a whole.

The first stage in Copenhagen is Stage 20 of 21 is also a time trial.

Since the 21st and final stage to Paris is usually a procession in which the finishing order is decided, it is stage 20 that determines the winner.

The longest stage is stage six on a 140-mile (220 km) course in northeastern France.

Riders will only have two rest days during the Tour, scheduled for July 11 and July 18 – although July 4 is a transition day.
