Spy Kids’ Alexa PenaVega ditched Showbiz for Christian Lives After Child Stardom

Alexa and Carlos PenaVega are known for their teen movies, but the couple left Hollywood to commit to their Christian faith years ago.

Alexa PenaVega (née Vega) is best known for her portrayal of feisty teenage spy Carmen Cortez, while her husband Carlos (né Pena) is best known as the heartthrob Carlos Garcia of the Big Time Rush.

Despite their well-established careers in Hollywood, the center of the entertainment industry, the three parents chose to change their fast-paced lives to raise their family in quiet Hawaii. And it wasn’t just for their children – both actors felt the harsh impact the film industry had on their mental health.

Alexa PenaVega: From Child Star to Prioritizing Faith

By the time the fourth and final Spy Kids movie came out in 2011, the actress was 23 years old and growing up in front of the camera – she already had over 45 credits to her name.

PenaVega got engaged to her husband after less than a year of dating in 2013 and by 2016 they had packed their lives for the island.

Says Fox NewsThe 33-year-old admitted that the move was initially because rejections from jobs “became too much” for her husband.

The couple never planned to raise their family in Los Angeles, but PenaVega says God ordered them to leave. At the time, she wasn’t excited about the dramatic change but realized she needed a “reset” because she was trapped in the industry. “I realized that Christianity was so much more and I miss it more,” the actress added.

“But one day I was praying in my car and all of a sudden I got this revelation. I felt like God was preparing us for this step. We were moving for my heart. You stopped me in my tracks because I thought all this time we were just moving for Carlos.”

My job became my identity. God got me out of that so I could learn how to be a wonderful mother and a wonderful wife.”

PenaVega met in a Bible study

Alexa was out of divorce in 2012 when she met Carlos on a Bible study. Romance was her last priority and her entertainment partner wasn’t her cup of tea.

Coincidentally, the Big Time Rush singer was on the same stride in his faith, so they associated themselves with getting closer to God.

“He was everything on my list. Everything on my no list was everything I never knew I needed. He was the one who could help fill in all the gaps I was missing in my life. That was Carlos.”

Despite living in Hawaii, the lovebirds aren’t completely late for their career; Both have starred in several Hallmark films and voiceover roles.
