Stuart Brand Duke “We Are Gods” sells Greenwich Entertainment

A documentary about counterculture icon and environmentalist Stuart Brand will receive a US release via Greenwich Entertainment.

The independent distributor purchased the feature film “We Are As Gods” from the directors of the 2017 Bill Nye documentary “Bill Nye: Science Guy,” David Alvarado and Jason Sussman. The documentary, which premiered at SXSW in 2021, will be shown in New York and Los Angeles on August 12.

“We Are As Gods” is a deep dive into the many facets of the brand – Zelig-like creator of The Whole Earth Catalog, influential member of “The Merry Pranksters” by Ken Casey, and an early activist in the modern environmental movement. The brand coined the phrase “PC” and influenced several heavyweight companies in Silicon Valley, including Steve Jobs. Now in his 80s, Brand is looking to leave a legacy for the future with his efforts to rebuild ecosystems by reviving extinct species. But, as he appears in the movie, his former allies believe he has gone too far.

Alvarado and Sussman said of the deal: “With our partners at Greenwich Entertainment, we are thrilled to bring Stewart Brand’s extraordinary story to cinemas and homes across America. Stewart is a fascinating subject for a documentary – a showman whose major projects transform humanity’s perspective on Earth, time, and now life. herself. Stewart has given filmmakers unfettered access to his life over the past three years, access to over 50 years of archival material never seen before. The result is a cinematic experience of the incredible life of this towering figure.”

Ed Arintz, Co-President of Greenwich, added: “David and Jason have created a largely entertaining bio-document of a Native American origin. For those who remember his counterculture book ‘The Whole Earth Catalog’ for those inspired by his thoughts on the emerging world of computing and technology and for those passionate about For his Last Crusade to End Extinction, we know audiences will be fascinated by Stewart Brand’s long and strange journey.”

“We Are As Gods” was completed in March 2020 and scheduled to be shown at Austin SXSW before the pandemic spread and the event was quickly canceled. Alvarado and Sussman wrote a popular and widely distributed column for diverse About their experience as one of the first filmmakers to be directly affected by the COVID-19 crisis in its early days.
