On the same day, reports surfaced that USC and UCLA were looking to join the Big Ten, and it became a formality and the reactions were funny.
Thursday started with a bombshell in college football and college sports in general when it was reported that USC and UCLA were aggressively exploring leaving the Pac-12 to move to the Big Ten.
It didn’t take long for the exploration to need confirmation from senior officials at conferences and schools to reach the next level.
On Thursday evening, ESPN’s Pete Tamil reported that the move was official as both schools joined the conference in 2024. USC and UCLA then confirmed the move (one that officially makes Los Angeles a city in the Midwest now) shortly after.
USC and UCLA join the Big Ten: The best memes, tweets, and reactions to get moving
Fans and analysts alike have been making jokes about the possibility of moving all day and the memes and reactions to the news didn’t stop once it became official.
It would be really funny to see these teams playing in the snow late in the college football season instead of in the LA climate or something close.
Geographically speaking, the move is clearly meaningless – but that’s not the important part in the new era of college sports. It’s all about dollars and cents, plus creating huge conventions that can rival the SEC now that it’s about to add Oklahoma and Texas.
This is funny in many ways, but we also shouldn’t expect that this will be the last change of conference in the near future, even if it doesn’t include two very California schools now joining a proud conference in the Midwest.
