Denzel Washington receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Denzel Washington will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. President Joe Biden announced Denzel today, as part of the president’s list of 17 new honorees who will receive the Medal of Freedom this year. Not only is this an outstanding (another) achievement for Denzel Washington, it will also be Just An actor or entertainer was honored with the award this year, making it an extra cool distinction.

Other honorees of this year’s Presidential Medal of Freedom include Simon Biles and Megan Rapinoe of the world of sports; Sister Simon Campbell and Father Alexander Karlotsos of the religious denomination; political leaders (Gabriel Giffords and Alan Simpson); Activists (Fred Gray, Diane Nash, Raoul Yazghair) and a whole list of others.

Denzel Washington’s list of accolades includes two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Glory) and Best Actor (Malcolm X) with eight nominations spanning five decades overall – including just this year for The Tragedy of Macbeth. Washington also won the Tony Award (“Fences”) and the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Golden Globes. Add the Medal of Freedom to that list now, too.

As for his acting career: Denzel Washington is preparing for this third trip as Robert McCall in director Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer film series — which will remake Denzel’s team with his Man On Fire co-star, Dakota Fanning. Fuqua recently teased some new details about The Equalizer 3, which could take the place from Boston to Europe, and delve deeper into Robert McCall’s origins:

“We’re shooting it in Italy, so that’s going to be fun. We’ll explore now. Sardinia, maybe it shows up somewhere on the Amalfi Coast. Also, we’re trying to find some small villages, seaside villages, things like that, and then we’ll be in Sicily and Naples.” .

Offscreen, Washington reminded the world the power of his presence this year, in the midst of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards. Washington was one of the first characters in the audience to jump in and take Smith aside — something he later talked about:

“Fortunately there were people there. Not just me, but others. Tyler Perry immediately came with me. [Said] some prayers. I don’t want to say what we talked about, but for God’s grace go any of us. Who do we owe? I don’t know all the details of the situation, but I know that the only solution is prayer, the way I see it.”

Medal of Freedom winners will be honored on July 7.
