Ha! The Mets’ worst nightmare for Jacob deGrom if he quits

New York Mets fans are better prepared for a worst-case scenario if Jacob deGrom pulls out.

Injured New York Mets player Jacob Degrom could withdraw from his contract after the end of the season.

Although DeGrom hasn’t competed with the Mets since last year, the All-Star is a four-time winner of two NL Cy Young Awards and named Rookie of the Year in New York uniform. However, the 34-year-old right-handed owner has struggled to maintain his health. As dominant as he was, it might keep him out of Cooperstown, like his former teammate, David Wright. What if he chooses?

ESPN’s Buster Olney threw an absolute bombshell with a tweet Saturday afternoon with, “There is a perception in some corners of the industry that if Jacob DeGrum follows up on what he said in the spring and gets out of the Mets contract, [Atlanta] The brave will be the favorites for his landing.”

Although the Mets are arch rivals with the Atlanta Braves, DeGrom grew up in Braves Country. He played baseball at his college at Stetson University in Deland, Florida, Chipper Jones’ hometown. DeGrom’s promotion of the Braves will have to make Mets fans sick their stomachs. This will be the equivalent of Braves fans watching Tom Glavine monument the Mets.

Was DeGrom really going to turn heel on the Mets to sign a one-year contract with Atlanta?

Jacob deGrom may withdraw from New York Mets deal and sign with Atlanta Braves

It’s funny to see DeGrom win the only team games that matter, I hate seeing players leave the only franchise they’ve ever known in free agency. I would be a complete hypocrite to say otherwise. As painful as Freddy Freeman’s passing was, baseball is at its core a business. The question is whether DeGrom’s withdrawal makes sense for him financially. This is not possible.

DeGrom has a no-trade clause in his Mets contract and player cancellation in 2022. He also had one baked after the 2021 MLB season, but decided to stay with the Mets. DeGrom is set to make $30.5 million in 2023 and $32.5 million in 2024 if New York exercises its option with the club. If he makes his deal, DeGrom will hit free agency in 2025 at the age of 37.

In short, DeGrom isn’t getting a multi-year deal as rich with the Braves as the one he got with the Mets. Atlanta may be more willing to spend money at this point in its competitive life cycle, but it can still be outbid by larger market teams, such as the Mets. Financially speaking, it doesn’t make any sense at all to walk away from that guaranteed money from the Mets. Then again, deGrom may want to checkout.

If DeGrom picks and signs with arch rival Braves, expect the Mets Twitter to catch fire.
