Banijay’s ‘Marie Antoinette’ has been licensed to BBC First in Australia

Banijay Rights, Banijay’s global distribution arm, has licensed eight-part historical drama “Marie Antoinette” to BBC First in Australia.

Created and written by Deborah Davis (“The Favourite”), “Marie Antoinette” tells the story of the incredibly trendy and pioneering young queen, played by Emilia Schull (“Cowdam 56/63”). Previously licensed to BBC2.

Marie Antoinette was barely 14 years old when she left Austria to marry the Dauphin of France. She grew from a stubborn young princess who navigated French court rules under pressure to continue the Bourbon line, into a true fashion icon, admired for her charisma, and recreated life at Versailles in her image: free, independent, and feminist. Even with rumors that undermined his reputation, this notorious character managed to defeat his enemies at the court of Versailles with courage and dignity.

The show was co-written by Louise Ironside (“The Split”), Avril E. Russell (“All on a Summer’s Day”) and Chloë Moss (“Run Sister Run”). The series is directed by Pete Travis (“Blood Land”) and Jeffrey Enthoven (“Children of Love”).

The show was produced by Banijay Studios France, CAPA Drama and Les Gens as Canal Plus Creation Original. Claude Shelley and Margot Balsan for the Capa Drama, Alban Etienne, Stéphanie Chartreux for Banijay Studios France and Christophe Tolomonde for Les Gens were produced by Claude Shelley and Margot Balsan for the film Alban Etienne.

Filming has taken place at many prestigious historical venues including the Châteaux of Versailles, Vaux-le-Vicomte, Lésigny, Champs and Voisins, and at the studios of Bry-sur-Marne.

“Marie Antoinette boasts gorgeous scenery and outstanding performances, and continues to gain strong traction around the world. This series chronicles the life of a unique young queen as she navigates the often dark and manipulative world of Versailles.”
