Gunnar Mortensen is dead: The Morning Show’s assistant cameraman was 39

E Gunnar Mortensen, assistant cameraman for Transparent and Apple TV + series “The Morning Show,” died Monday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was 39 years old.

Mortensen has been a member of Local 600 for 13 years. In this capacity, he has served on the National Executive Board of the International Cinematographers Guild since 2013 and as Co-Chair of the Active Engagement Committee since 2017. His most recent work has been on the upcoming film Your Place or Mine, a romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher.

“We have reached out to the family to offer our condolences and any support we can offer,” ICG National President Bird Steptoe, Sr. and National Executive Director Rebecca Ryan wrote in a note to members. “I know you all share our deep sorrow over this intolerable loss of Gunnar’s wife, Kelly, and his son, Lars, and our local, to whom he gave so much, so freely.”

Mortensen worked in the filming teams for films and shows such as “All The Money in the World”, “I Am the Night”, “Chasing Mavericks” and “Sons of Anarchy”. Mortensen has also taught workshops for focus attractors.

Mortensen began his career in Denver, but moved to Los Angeles in 2006 to pursue better job opportunities. in Zoom Workshop 2020, he talked about starting to work at $100 a day jobs until he finally got enough experience to join the union. He stressed the importance of building relationships along the way as he developed his craft.

“It was a smaller ‘transparent’ show, but it was a nice show, and it helped me build the foundation from that,” he said at the workshop. “Every job you do and you think, ‘Oh, I don’t know how I can do this shot,’ and then you do it, And then they get stronger, better, faster, and more efficient. And then, it just prepares you for the next job… All of this makes you a better person and a better focus attraction.”

Mortensen’s fatal accident occurred on Interstate 74 between Hemet and Mountain Center, According to news reports.
