The physicality of performing with something so stressful was a process that I was obviously going through, and a process that started before I even started wearing it. I have some videos and screenshots on my phone for a makeup test with Barry [Gower], And saying the words in the outfit, it was like half. But in my time, out of fashion, I think of the hand, how that would move, how I was going to carry myself, as my strength came from both physically and emotionally.
Perhaps the only scenes of Jimmy Campbell Power without any prosthetics are when he played one before the massacre at Hawkins Lab, but he was able to prepare to play Vicina without wearing the full costume. With Jamie Campbell Bower’s skin covered in the prosthetics that helped make Vecna so intimidating, he can also use his energy and body to deliver his performance. He can’t be expressive in comparison to his co-stars who don’t use prosthetics, but he still manages to “own the space” after all of his outfit preparations. He explained the “long process” to hone his performance as a Vecna:
So it was a long process of thinking about it, first of all, experiencing it in terms of actually trying these movements, trying how I was going to walk, stillness. Then actually put it all into practice. I was lucky enough to be able to see sets, like the den of the mind, before I had to shoot in them. I got a walkthrough of it. Well, everything, just think, move, do it all the time. It was great.
The Mind Lair was new (and pretty scary) set for a fourth season, and it was only fitting that the actor got a spacewalk before actually playing Vecna in all his sinister Upside Down glory. Between his appearance in costume, Bauer’s physical performance, and how the character killed his victims (With some terrifying sound effects), Vicna may come down as the most feared villain in Weird things Date.
Of course, a lot depends on what happens in the fifth and final season. There is still a question as to how much of a threat the Mind Flayer really is, and Vecna may be able to unleash an Upside Down on Hawkins after Season 4. Eddie’s death (Which actor Joseph Quinn revealed was “weird” for his portrayal for an interesting reason) means the heroes have less of an ally than they did prior to the season 4 finale, and it seems safe to say that Max won’t be in the throes of the action as he once was.
There’s no word yet on when fans can expect Season 5, but hopefully the wait won’t be as long as they’ve been waiting for Season 4 after Season 3 in 2019!
