Nintendo Switch online surprises some subscribers with the game Bonus N64

Last night, Nintendo expanded the Nintendo Switch Online library with the addition of the N64 Pokemon game. However, you didn’t need to be an expansion pack owner to claim this free N64 game, but it was only offered in North America and Europe. In Japan, subscribers did not get the free service Pokemon game, but rather a different N64 game and its sequel. In other words, where everyone got one game, Switch Online subscribers in Japan got two N64 games.

The two games involved are Custom Robo and its complement Custom Robo V2.0. If this pair of games doesn’t sound familiar, it’s because the first game of this pair was only released in Japan and China while the sequel was only released in Japan. Developed by Noise and published by Nintendo, both games have been fairly well reviewed. The first game appeared in 1999 and followed in 2000. In 2002, these games were followed up Custom Robo GX on Game Boy Advance. This was another release for Japan only. The series didn’t come west until 2004 when another game appeared under the name Custom Robo It was released, this time via the Nintendo GameCube. The last game in the series came three years later in 2007 when Custom Robo Arena It was released in 2007. It was a worldwide release.

It’s unclear why Japanese subscribers get different games compared to North America and Europe, but it’s not uncommon. In fact, this happens more often than global lineups in all regions. Some have assumed it’s ratings or licensing issues, but that’s just speculation.
