Instagram Live Producer will allow you to broadcast to Instagram from your desktop

Today, Instagram has introduced a new tool that allows creators to broadcast on the platform through the desktop. With the new Instagram Live Producer, creators will be able to broadcast live using software like OBS or Streamlabs.

So far, only creators can start Instagram Live from their smartphone. However, with Instagram Live Producer, broadcasting on Instagram will work as it does on other live broadcasting platforms, such as Twitch and YouTube. The new functionality will allow content creators to use additional external cameras and microphones for live broadcasts and even allow them to add custom graphics, title and end cards, etc. to the broadcast.

In a blog post, Instagram highlighted the recommended audio and video format requirements for streaming on the platform with the new Live Producer tool. The company has also provided step-by-step instructions for setting up your first live broadcast. Check the section below for recommended technical requirements.

  • video format
    • Aspect ratio 9 x 16 (recommended but not required)
    • 720p@30fps (Note: 30fps recommended, but Live Producer can support 60fps if desired. When using 60fps, the Live Producer preview screen will still display 30fps. This is normal and we’re looking Currently on how to fix that.)
      • Resolution: 720 x 1280
      • Video bit rate range: 2250-6000 kbps
      • Alternatives (supported but not recommended): 480p at 30fps, 360p
  • phonetic form (The settings below are the default for most streaming platforms, including OBS)
    • Sample rate: 44.1 kHz
    • Channel layout: stereo
    • Bit rate: up to 256 kbps

To use Instagram Live Producer, click the “Add Post” button on Instagram.com and select “Live” from the dropdown menu. On the Live Broadcast screen, enter a title for the broadcast, select your audience, and click Next. On the next page, you will see the unique URL and broadcast key. Enter the streaming key into the streaming software of your choice, and you are good to go.
