Announcing the PlayStation Stars Rewards Program

Soon after releasing the revamped PlayStation Plus levels, Sony is releasing another new PlayStation software. This program is called “PlayStation Stars,” and is meant to be an “all-new loyalty program” that rewards users via tournaments, challenges, and even by earning prizes. Loyalty points that can be exchanged for things like PlayStation Network wallet money were one of the most attractive reward options that Sony discussed in the PlayStation Stars announcement. Best of all, the software itself is free and doesn’t require a subscription like PlayStation Plus.

PlayStation Stars is out now but will launch sometime later this year, Sony’s announcement was shared inside Linked PlayStation Blog Post He said. In the announcement, Sony said PlayStation Stars would be “free to join,” and no paid aspects were ever discussed in the post.

We’ve seen that PlayStation users have presented community challenges in the past that gave them profile icons and such to complete various tasks, and from the announcement, it looks like this is the kind of thing that will be wrapped in PlayStation Stars now. There’s also a monthly check-in campaign that gives rewards for just playing any game once a month, but specific prizes and harder tasks like being “the first player to get a mega platinum title in your local timezone” will get better rewards.

Then there’s the PSN wallet connection which again seems to be the most attractive part of this deal.

“All PlayStation Stars members will have opportunities to earn loyalty points. Points can be redeemed in a catalog that may include PSN wallet funds and select PlayStation Store products,” Sony said. As an added benefit, PlayStation Plus members who are registered with PlayStation Stars automatically earn points for purchases on the PlayStation Store.

Another type of bonus consists of “digital collectibles” that certainly look like NFTs at first glance, and describing them in more detail as things like digital figurines and relics of Sony’s past doesn’t help their cause. Sony has not confirmed this Washington Post That these are “definitely not NFTs” and cannot be traded or sold and are not associated with anything blockchain related, so it appears that they are just digital holdings without any of the NFT clutter accompanying them.

PlayStation Stars doesn’t have a release date yet, but it will launch later this year after being tested for the first time regionally.
