Dakota Johnson plays Anne Elliott, a once tormented romantic but now a smiling singleton who ditches the camera and has a musical “playlist” for piano band.
Anne arrives in a “bottle of red” when her “ex”, Navy officer Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), returns to Somerset Regency and begins courting her sister-in-law.
There’s nothing wrong with updating the classics, but jamming into modern dating jargon feels pretty nurturing. I’m sure Anne could appeal to millennials without acting like a rip-off Fleabag.
