The Boys’ Showrunner Slams TV series that aims to be 10-hour movies

How many times have you heard a TV presenter or actor describe his or her series as a six to ten hour movie? This is how Anthony Mackie described “The Hawk and the Winter Soldier” (that I feel like “A six or eight hour movie,” he said), while Ewan McGregor describe it “Obi-Wan Kenobi” as “one big movie” which was “split into these episodes.” Well, says Eric Kripke, a showrunner of The Boys, that’s enough. Talking to Eagle, Kripke has expressed frustration with designing streaming series as feature films rather than episodic television.

“The downside to live broadcasting is that a lot of the filmmakers who work in streaming haven’t necessarily come out of that network,” Kripke said. “They are more comfortable with the idea that they can give you 10 hours where nothing happens until 8. It drives me crazy, personally.”

Kripke continued, “As a network guy who’s had to pique your interest in people for 22 hours a year, I didn’t take advantage of, ‘Oh, just wait there and don’t worry. Critics will tell you that by episode eight, shit is really hitting the fan. Or someone who says, “Well, what I really make is a 10-hour movie.” Damn you! No you are not! Do a TV show. You’re in the entertainment business.”

Before he had success on live broadcasts with “The Boys”, Kripke gained fame as the creator of the long-running television series “Supernatural”. The model didn’t give up storytelling casually when he jumped on Prime Video with “The Boys.” Now that he’s gone into broadcasting, Kripke says he will never return to broadcast.

I can’t see back to the network at all. It’s the ability to do two things: write most of your scripts before shooting a movie a day, and then finish all the episodes before they go on air,” Kripke said. Network TV. has already been broadcast; I threw it out the door. You are locked up. It happens all the time: We’re in the middle of filming episode seven, and we realize there’s a different story we need. We still have time to go back and shoot the first episode and bring it back again.”

“The Boys” recently wrapped its third season and has already been renewed for a fourth season.
