Ordinary Observers of Parks and recreational resorts You might know Ron Swanson as an anti-government libertarian with a distinctive mustache that rivals Tom Selleck. The manager of the Pawnee Gardens department loves a good Lagavulin, is often involved in carpentry, and has been married to two different women named Tami.
However, true fans of the show know that when it comes to Ron, played by the incomparable Nick Offerman, there is a lot more than meets the eye. Here’s our list of the top insider secrets of Ron Swanson of this magnitude Gardens and recommendation Fans will not soon forget.
It’s so special
Ron Swanson is a very private person. In fact, before Leslie found out about his birthday, the only people who knew the history were Baskin Robbins employees. The date has even been omitted from all government documents.
Ron does his best to destroy evidence of his home, personal life, and family. We didn’t even know his siblings until season seven!
Ron also crashes a drone delivering a package to his infant son (whose birth is kept secret until weeks after his birth).
Hides money… and other things
Ron is probably one of the richest men in Pawnee, thanks to the gold bars he buried over the years. In fact, when he needs to prepare a will, he tells Ben that he only knows his net worth by weight.
But he’s not just hiding money: There’s a stash of bacon stashed in the ceiling above his desk. We first heard about this emergency bacon when Leslie walked into Ron’s office saying “You just saved your bacon,” and Ron replies, “No way. You don’t even know where it is,” before peeking at the ceiling.
He is a big fan of strong sports
Ron loves strong and independent women. Perhaps this explains why he’s an ardent fan of the WNBA, including ex-basketball player Cheryl Swoops. Ron also loves pro tennis player Steffi Graf, saying she is the “salt woman of the earth” at the top of her court.
But his love for independent women definitely gets him into some trouble. Tami Two (played by Offerman’s real-life wife Megan Mullally) may be one of the best side characters in Gardens and recommendationBut she wreaks havoc in Ron’s life every time they meet.
However, Ron’s taste for strong women certainly explains his later relationship with Diane, a middle school vice principal and certified tough cookie who isn’t afraid to stand up to Tami Toe.
He had some tough jobs as a kid
Ron mentions throughout the series that he outlaws child labor laws – after all, he started working in a sheet metal factory at the age of nine.
Ron stayed in the sheet metal mill until he was eleven, at which point he got a great job offer from the tannery (although he eventually had to quit as he worked quite a bit in the sheet metal mill and tannery. And the going to middle school). Leslie shares this lesson, reminding her of some sage advice:
Honestly, these are some words to live by.
He is Moonlight as the Duke of Silver
All Pawnee women relish Duke Silver, the gentle saxophonist and soft jazz bassist. Unbeknownst to everyone, Duke Silver is just Ron Swanson in a hat.
Ron’s secret is safe from most of Parks’ staff, though April revealed to Ron in season two that her mother is a huge fan of Duke Silver and that she knows his alter ego all along.
Duke Silver makes several appearances throughout the series, such as when Ron records a secret saxophone solo for Andy’s song “Catch Your Dream.”
You can even listen to Duke Silver on Spotify.
He has only cried twice in his life
Ron Swanson cried only twice in his life. Once when he was seven, he was hit by a school bus, and again when he found out Lil Sebastian had passed.
While everyone in Pawnee is obsessed with Li’l Sebastian, Ron gets especially dizzy when he sees the little horse. At Lil Sebastian’s memorial service, Ron is tasked with lighting the eternal flame, a task he takes very seriously (although he would have preferred to lay a ceremonial wreath). His eyebrows burn in the process (thanks to Jerry), but Ron doesn’t seem too bothered about it. Or maybe it is I was Annoyed… It’s hard to tell without eyebrows.
On certain days, he dressed like Tiger Woods
In season one, Tom shared that after a night of lovemaking, Ron always shows up to work dressed as Tiger Woods. It’s a deadly giveaway when Ron arrives wearing a red polo shirt with black khakis – and that’s how Tom learns that his ex is sleeping with Ron.
It’s taken even further when Ron meets Tami One, who shows up to work the next day wearing a blue polo shirt with his mustache shaved.
Leslie shares a love for breakfast foods
Ron is a legend when it comes to banishing breakfast meats, with his favorite JJ’s Diner being the Four Seasons Eggporkalypse: twelve eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, chicken-fried steak, hash browns, and a stack of pancakes. Ron even has a stock photo of a beautiful woman with a breakfast plate hanging in his office.
Breakfast is the cornerstone of Leslie and Ron’s friendship: while they disagree about a lot, they always agree that breakfast food trumps all other foods.
He loves puzzles
While he may try to hide his excitement at first, Ron is a sucker for good mysteries. He drops everything to help Ben solve the mystery of Leslie’s Valentine’s Day, and is already excited to solve the mystery of his missing keys when April loses them in City Hall. He’s also very proud of April because he created a puzzle he couldn’t solve.
And while we know Ron hates celebrating his birthday, he quietly suggests to Leslie that maybe in a year she can make him a puzzle-themed birthday surprise.
He has a soft spot for Andy and April
April and Andy are a classic case of “opposites attract”. But did you notice that Ron has a weakness for both?
April is the only person who understands Ron. They share a hatred of people and government work, and Ron appreciates April’s incompetence as an employee. Although April doesn’t know that March 31st is a real date, Ron has a definite soft spot for the eccentric young man, and some of the best Gardens and recommendation Episodes occur when the two are in a state of mutual cooperation.
Ron sees Andy, on the other hand, as a kind of son personality. He often advises Andy and even pays him to take a gender studies course at the local community college.
Ron even sells his cabin to April and Andy for eight dollars, a set of loose cough drops, and Jerry’s inhaler, despite receiving quotes for the property on the asking price.
He can’t help himself when it comes to manual labor
We know Ron can’t help himself when it comes to beautiful brunettes or breakfast food, but there’s another weakness he can’t get away from: manual labor.
Ron spends the entire month of April and Andy’s Halloween party repairing the couple’s home and has built many of the cabins himself. He also finds himself in Ron Swanson Heaven when he takes on the entire third floor renovation project of Pawnee City Hall himself.
