Steam has a feature that is about eight years old now called the Steam Discovery Queue, and even if you don’t know it by name, you’ve likely used it at least once or twice when looking for something new to play. It’s a feature that has led to “a total of 18 billion game store pages,” Valve said in its latest Steam Discovery Queue discussion, and it was updated this week to make it easier to find a new game.
The updated Steam Discovery Queue list has been addressed in the latest Steam Labs post on the platform site with Valve outlining two main ways to change the Steam Discovery Queue. This new version of the feature launches within Steam Labs to get user feedback on how it looks and feels compared to the old version, but you can easily see it for yourself without any fuss by Sign in here and selecting “Open The New Discovery Queue” to view it without having to properly open Steam.
When you check out the new Steam Discovery Queue, it will show you which games you might like based on what some of your friends are playing as well as other titles and genres you might have shown an interest in. You can head over to the store page or wishlist at the time, and perhaps best of all, the new Steam Discovery Queue can be accessed without leaving any page you’re browsing at the time.
Valve highlighted this change and more in a summary of what’s new in the feature:
Steam discovery queue updates
- Get started in the queue without leaving the page you’re on
- A simplified presentation of the main details about each game to give you an idea of the content of this game
- Find out why each game is specifically recommended to you; Maybe it’s because you have friends who play it, or it’s similar to other games you play, for example
- Add a game to your wishlist with the click of a button or view the game’s full store page for a more in-depth view
- Ignore games that are not confusing to you. We will make sure to hide it in the future.
Those are all changes implemented for now, but going forward, Valve said it plans to do things like make it so that the updated queue is on the Steam homepage and can be launched from any store page. It will also be optimized for different screen sizes as well as on Steam Deck.
