Where is the Open Championship in 2023?

St Andrews threw a historic 150th Open but now we’re looking forward to future British Open spots for 2023 and beyond.

As if there was any doubt, playing the 2022 British Open at the Old Stadium in St Andrews was something of an exception. For the 150th Open Championship, they needed a historic venue to crown a historic champion and going to the golf course was always the right choice. And golfers lived up to this point, too.

From Rory McIlroy looking to end his eight-year major drought to Tiger Woods’ famous 18th lane run in front of thousands of raucous and adoring fans, it was a tournament that won’t soon be forgotten.

But the Open Championship moves in every year, which means we’ll be somewhere else besides St Andrews in 2023 and beyond. So let’s take a look at the future UK Open positions for next year and even further afield with some predictions.

British Open future locations: Where is the 2023 Open?

The 2023 British Open will take place at the historic Holick Course in the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. This will be the first time an R&A team has attended the tournament there in nearly a decade since the last time it was played there was in 2014. It is fitting that this tournament was won by Rory McIlroy, who was unable to defend in The following year in St. Andrews with an ankle injury.

Future UK Open Positions for 2023 and Beyond

After heading to Royal Liverpool in 2023, the British Open announced two official sites. In 2024, it will be a flight back to Scotland to play in the Royal Troon, where The Open was last played in 2016 and was won by Henrik Stenson. The following year, the 2025 Open would take place at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, where Shane Lowry broke through and won again in 2019.

Although not announced then, we can assume that St Andrews – usually hosts every five years but that has been decimated by COVID – Turnberry, Muirfield, Royal Lytham and St Annes will host in the next few years after 2025 in some order.
