Gus Fring is gay in Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad

TV doesn’t get much better than this.

While it’s great to reboot Better Call Saul on screens, it sure is bittersweet knowing that this is the sixth and final season.

Created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, this American crime drama is a spin-off and prequel to Breaking Bad and invites audiences back to Albuquerque, New Mexico with Bob Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill. There are a few other familiar faces in the mix as well, including Mike and Gus Fring.

Gus, portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito, was a terrifying villain in Breaking Bad. Very calm and collected but able to break out into a show of extreme violence at the drop of the hat. Much about the character is left vague and unmentioned, giving way to some theories over the years. One of the biggest questions begs an interesting question: Is Gus Fring gay?

An encounter with a man over a bottle of wine in Season 6, Episode 9 was interpreted as flirtatious, so let’s give a theory.

Theory: Gus Fring is gay in Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad

There are a few reasons that might encourage fans to speculate that Jas is secretly gay.

Drug lord Los Pollos Hermanos was introduced in Breaking Bad Season 3 but it was the fourth who enlightened us on his traumatic past. Season 4 Episode 8 described in detail that Gus had a business partner – Max Arciniega – with whom he founded Los Pollos Hermanos. We learned that they were very close and that they became involved in business with the cartel beyond their duties in the restaurant.

However, Don Eladio ordered Hector Salamanca to kill Max in front of Gus and his attempts to get rid of the cartel were an attempt to avenge his partner’s death. Some feel that the severity of his revenge suggests that they were romantic partners as well.

This is reinforced by the single line spread in both series. For example, Lalo Salamanca argues in the season 5 premiere that Gus wants to hurt Hector for killing his “friend”.

He might say it like it was a joke, but when it comes to writing in this series, every bit of dialogue counts.

Dedicado max

Further support for the theory is the episode title for Season 5 Episode 5.

Titled Dedicado a Max, this translates from Spanish to English as “Dedicated to Max.” Again, this may be read as Gus’s criticism of Salamanca to avenge his business partner, but it may also indicate that he is acting out of love.

We know that Gus is married with children after seeing Breaking Bad; Walter visits his house and there are toys everywhere, while weighing down his children’s hatred of certain foods.

However, this does not mean that he is not hiding a secret, especially when you consider Giancarlo Esposito’s position on this matter …

“I think it was definitely deduced.”

During an interview with timeGiancarlo was asked if he feels that Gus and Max share a romantic relationship:

“I think it’s definitely inferred in a very subtle way, but it’s just like the men of Europe walking down the street who are really very narrow, very close to each other and holding hands. I think it’s a real commentary on our social standing in our world here in America. I think it’s Not so – again, neither black nor white. Is it possible? Maybe.”

He added, “It’s very possible that it was, and I like the fact that she was left like that, it’s up to you as an audience to decide whether they can be lovers or not… But I liked the fact that she went another way. The conclusion was that it’s This might be his mistress. What does it matter? I think it’s great not to stamp her with a yes or no.”
