Keanu Reeves presents a new record-breaking comic book series on the big screen: BZRKR, the story of an immortal demigod trapped in a cycle of bloodshed and death through the ages. Now that BZRKR has become a hit comic (with a highly anticipated sequel on the horizon), it’s time for it to become a hit! The main characters of BOOM! BRZRKR’s creative studio team came to San Diego Comic-Con 2022 – including Keanu Reeves!
Needless to say, Keanu Reeves got a standing ovation from the Hall H fans, after playing some BRZRKR video clips. Reeves talked about how his idea of a “man who can punch boxes” gave birth to the BRZRKR – thanks to the creative team that supported it.
Matt Kindt talked about the series and the complexity of making an immortal character. He’ll add later that it’s not just “punching through the chest”: there’s a real heart in the character to explore.
Artist Ron Garney echoed the joy of getting to paint a character who could do the violence we get on the series—although he goes a bit too far in suggesting the presence of cannibals. On a serious note, Garney says there are deeper levels of complex character, and that’s fun to explore. When compounded by a love of violence, Reeves reminds him that BRZRKR is a story “about humanity…and the nature of violence.” The moderator joked that we see the book room happening in real time.
Garnet would go on to explain BRZRKR’s subplot with his mother, with whom he was deeply attached. There are layers here.
Kian talks about how he has been truly supported in his creative endeavors by BOOM! , referring to the main people who contributed, describing them as “masters of their craft”. Reeves goes on to describe the first day he held his BRZRKR #1 in his hand, whispering, “Best birthday!” Ever. It only became more fun when he actually read it and loved the stories.
Chieef Editor Eric Harburn talks about how BRZRKR has changed the rules of the game at BOOM! With its record success. EiC Matt Gagnon joins Harburn in thanking Reeves for coming and helping make this happen.
Discussing the BRZRKR’s ending made Reeves joke that the ending isn’t the end (“Is it?…..”). He points out that the immortal’s epic has matured for more interpretation and storytelling. It was also confirmed that BRZRKR would not only continue as a feature film, but also a Netflix series.
Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin talks about adapting MRZRKR into a movie. He understands the pressure on his shoulders to achieve and continue the success of other BRZRKR innovators. For him, he says, the idea of one man with the same power over 80,000 years of change and evolution in the world is an exciting hook I’m excited to explore.
Stephen Christie starts talking about BRZRKR anime about Keanu being a true comic fan in blue (Reeves objects that he’s a green belt for brown and black belts and doesn’t wear the belts of other panelists). It has been confirmed that BRZRKR’s Netflix anime will have two seasons, and IG (Ghost in the Shell) will be the studio that produced it.
