“The sound world of the film began with long trips to Mexico and Nigeria. We spent our days working with traditional musicians who educated us about the cultural, social, and historical contexts of their music,” Black Panther Composer Ludwig Goransson said in a statement. “We created a catalog of instrumental and audio recordings with them to explore the traditional and non-traditional uses of their musical material.”

Goranson continued, “During the nights of these trips, we held recording sessions with contemporary artists who resembled the thematic characters and materials explored in the film. Using [writer-director] Ryan Coogler and [co-writer] Joe Robert Cole’s text as a blueprint, along with recordings of traditional musicians, set out to build a musical vocabulary for the characters, stories, and cultures of Talukan and Wakanda.”
