A new semester is upon us, and with it thousands of students are traveling across the country home away from home – some for the first time.
Student life always presents its difficulties, especially for those who are new to living independently. Cooking our own meals and cleaning up after ourselves can be very interesting! However, having the right hardware can make all the difference.
Owning a personal blender or air fryer, for example, can produce delicious results quickly and with minimal effort. So, if you are heading off to college, this is the best equipment you need in your life for the students who live in it.

Every student needs an air fryer for quick, tasty and relatively healthy recipes. The compact Dash Fryer is compact, making it ideal for storage and inexpensive. However, its compact design does not affect its performance, as we found it great for air frying chicken wings when we tested it. It’s perfect for cooking for two or two and comes in an array of attractive colours. Control couldn’t be easier with two dials for temperature and time, and the basket is dishwasher safe. You’ll be using this appliance more than you think with fresh, crispy French fries.

A vacuum cleaner might not be at the top of your list of things to buy, but it’s an important device, especially for those with long hair. Cordless is best for students because they are convenient for getting rid of spills and should have enough battery to cover the dorm when needed. The lightweight Eureka RapidClean Pro Cordless Vacuum Cleaner won’t break the bank and will pick up all kinds of debris in one sweep. Plus it can be used as a portable device when needed as well.
For coffee lovers, the Braun Brew Sense KF6050 Drip Coffee Machine is the best you can buy. It offers an impressive array of features at a reasonable price, including an adjustable warmth setting. It can brew up to 12 cups of coffee in its own glass carafe and comes with permanent filters and a 24-hour timer as well. The only thing it lacks is frothing milk, but for under $100 you can’t ask for more.
I relied a lot on this machine during college, but nothing is quite as satisfying as a freshly baked grilled cheese sandwich. It’s quick, delicious, and easy to prepare with a squeeze of panini. This George Foreman model can prepare two meals and comes with a tray to collect any grease or drained fat, and it’s dishwasher safe. It’s extremely compact, measuring just 9.38 x 5.12 x 10.25 inches, and it couldn’t be easier to use. A four-course model is available for an additional $5 if you like more than one sandwich at a time.
Blenders are a great way to get more vitamins in your diet. Full-size sizes can be bulky and expensive, which is why we recommend students to the Hamilton Beach Personal Mixer. It can brew one serving of juice at a time, and the beaker can double as a travel mug, so you can grab it and go. The mug and lid are dishwasher safe too, so the design is as convenient as it gets. It is available in five colors including black, blue, raspberry, red and white.
Toasters are a very basic appliance for most students. We chose this one because of its extra wide apertures and six browning settings. It also comes with custom settings for bagels and gluten-free bread. It features a sophisticated black finish and at $15, the toaster won’t be much cheaper. There is also a standard pull-out breadcrumb tray for easy cleaning.
While this mini fridge is likely smaller than you might expect, it still accommodates four cans and can sit neatly on your worktop instead of taking up precious floor space. It comes with two levels of shelves plus a slim compartment on the inside of the door, perfect for chocolate bars. It’s available in a range of colors too, including a cow pattern! It’s definitely as cute as a mini fridge and steal 50 bucks can get.
If your bedroom is too hot, a fan is a must. You don’t need to spend big bucks to get a good one though, we recommend the Honeywell HT-900 TurboForce Air Circulator fan. It’s compact, so you can put it on your desk, and it comes with three speeds and a 90-degree axial temperature. It can even be installed on the wall if needed.
