Antivirus Pioneer John McAfee Gets a Netflix Documentary

Curious Films produces “Running With The Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee,” a feature-length Netflix documentary that tells the story of the life and death of software pioneer John McAfee.

The British-American company McAfee was the inventor of one of the most successful and vilified programs of all time: McAfee Antivirus. At his peak, McAfee was worth $100 million. But when his neighbor was killed, he ran away – and called a camera crew with him. McAfee claims to be running for his life, and is pursued by gunmen. McAfee and the film’s crew travel deep into the Belize rainforest, across an international border, upriver in the jungles of Guatemala and across the Bahamas on a boat laden with guns, drugs and alcohol, in an effort to stay one step ahead of their alleged stalkers.

In 2020, McAfee was arrested in Spain for US tax evasion. In 2021, he is found dead in his prison cell.

With exclusive access to hundreds of hours of never-before-seen videos, McAfee footage and in-depth accounts from people who knew him well, “Running With The Devil” aims at the ultimate story of a larger-than-life character, a man who has run for US President twice , escaped from prison several times, and claimed to have penetrated the world.

The documentary was directed by Charlie Russell and executive produced by Dov Friedman, founders of Curious Films, who previously produced the Amy Winehouse documentary Reclaiming Amy.

“Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee,” said Friedman, is a story that took more than ten years to make, a stranger-than-fiction tale like no other, about a powerful man who lived his real life as if it were a high-octane Hollywood movie — and the consequences for his life. close to him. We are so proud to be telling this amazing story for the first time on Netflix.”

The documentary is streaming on Netflix as of August 24.
