Hugh Grant might play a rogue in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, But there is growing suspicion that his character is linked to a more powerful enemy rooted in D&D lore. Although Paramount Pictures gave fans a first look at Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Last week, there was still a lot we didn’t know about the movie. For example, it is not clear exactly who or what is the villain in the new movie. Although reports (and SDCC interviews) suggest that Hugh Grant is one of the movie’s villains, we don’t know much about his Forge Fitzwilliam character other than that he betrayed the movie’s adventure party and appears to have become a master of Neverwinter. It was an adventurous party in prison. Grant was very cautious about his character in initial interviews, stating that he joined the film due to the strength of the script and citing his unique sense of humor.
Also in the fight are the Red Wizards of Thay, a powerful group of wizards who want to end all life in Toril and turn the forgotten worlds into a place for the zombies. The Red Wizards appear multiple times in the trailer, carrying a mysterious red horn and battling Edgin’s Chris Pine and his allies in multiple scenes. At least the minor antagonists in the movie, but there are indications that their leader, the undead Lisa Tam, could also make an appearance. If Edgin and his friends deliver the “Apocalypse” artifact to The Red Wizards, Tam sure is somehow involved.
Notably, the trailer also features one of Tam’s loyal followers – Red Wizard Dralas, played by Jason Wong. Dralas is the spellcaster who uses the “Green Flame Blade” in the movie and appears to be in a fight scene with Rege-Jean Page’s character in Underdark. Dralas (or anyone associated with Dralas) already exists Dungeons & Dragons canon, having appeared in several D&D Adventurer’s League adventures released along with the 2018 adventure. As we’ve noted before, Grant was very keen to give any details about his character during the SDCC interviews, citing a Paramount Pictures email warning him not to let go of any “spoilers.” What if these spoilers included Grant’s true loyalties – either as a secret agent of the Red Wizards or perhaps as Szass Tam himself? It would definitely make sense for lich to be the real villain of the movie, and lich could easily create a sequel, where players would need to destroy the magical artifact that houses the lich’s soul in order to kill them once and for all.
